Page 8 Sports Bits Matt Cissne The Collegian ON THE ROPES: Former heavyweight ehampion, Evandcr Holyfield, is considering retiring after dropping a 12-round unanimous decision to new champion, Riddick Bowc. Holyficld said that he has accomplished all that he wanted and he wants to dedicate more time to his family. Bowc, now 32-0, said that he dedicated his win to his imprisoned friend, Mike Tyson. DRAFT DAY: The expansion teams, the Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins, each choose 36 players from the other major league teams in Tuesday's expansion draft. The Rockies' first pick was David Nied and the Marlins' snatched Nigel Wilson with their first selection. Nied, a former Atlanta Brave, is a right handed pitcher. Last season, Nied was 14-9 and had a 2.84 ERA in class AAA ball. Wilson, a former Toronto Blue lay, hit 26 homers and had 69 RBl’s in class AA ball last season. WHEELIN’ AND DEALIN’: There were six draft related trades on Tuesday, but the big trade had nothing to do with the draft. The Seattle Mariners dealt outfielder Kevin Mitchell to the Cincinnati Reds for pitcher Norm Charlton. Charlton had 26 saves and a 2.99 ERA last season, while Mitchell, who was hampered by injuries, batted .286 with 67 RBl’s. NO RESPECT: My friends have been giving me grief the past two weeks about the picks that 1 have made in this column. In case you have not been keeping track, I have been wrong on all 4 of the picks that I have made. If you are like my wonderful friends, you may want to put your tuition money on the team that I pick against. MY PICK: This week I will change my poor performance of the past two weeks! I feel real good about this one! The Buffalo Bills will not be able to cover the 13.5 point spread against the Atlanta Falcons. The Bills arc coming off an emotional win over the Miami Dolphins and are ripe for an upset. The Falcons, on the other hand, need a win to keep pace in the competitive NFC play-off drive. Sharp by Andrew Festa The Collegian The Gun and Safety Organization, formerly known as the Rifle Club, entered its first competition meet of the nineteen nineties last week against Edinboro’s Rifle Club. The Gun and Safety Organization sent five of its best shooters to join in a match against four of Edinboro’s best; (one of Behrcnd’s team members was discounted.) In a match that lasted nearly two hours, Bchrcnd’s rifle team shot well. Still, they lost to Edinboro’s team by 2.3 points, 824 to 801. Bchrend had three of the five top scores of the night. Afterwards, each Bchrend member commented on how he or she might have been able to add an extra few points. Later, the organization’s president Bridget Mooney, said, “you all did quite well considering they have their own range and they can practice much more than you’re able.” Bchrend’s team consisted of organization Treasurer, Kristen Drawl, Vice President, John (Duke) Ellenberger, Dale Robinson, Andrew Festa, and Chris Holliday. The Ediribbro members were. Can Prichard, Harry Lance, Chad Berry, and Ron Yeager. On hand for the meet were the club advisors: Edinboro’s Dr. John Polo, Physics Professor, and Behrcnd’s Jim Scrafin, Student Computer Lab Coordinator. Anyone who would like to participate in The Gun and Safety Fall ends by Hal Coffe The Collegian The falling snow brought about the end of both the fall season and the I.M. men’s football tournament. This year, 28 teams played 74 games leading up to the championship between Tau Kappa Epsilon black and Smiling Assassins. In two feet of snow on November 16, they dueled in a grueling game. Steve North (TKE) connected with "Gasman" Dan Phillips for a 35 yard TD and "T-Man" Dan Phillips on a 25 yard TD, but both 2 point conversions failed. Kurt Spence (Smiling Assassins) tossed a 7 yard TD to Rob Nelson which proved to be the Assassins' only points. The final score was TKE Black 12, Smiling Assassins 6. Billiards was held in the Back Room over a two week period of round robin and single elimination rounds.
