Page 16 Sports Bits HELLO: The Toronto Blue Jays' beat the Oakland Athletics 9-2 yesterday to clinch their first ever American League pennant. Juan Guzman picked up the win for the Jays who beat the A’s 4-2 in the series. Candy Maldonado and Joe Carter each hit long balls for Toronto. The Blue Jays will face either the Pittsburgh Pirates or the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. WORKHORSE: Art Monk of the Washington Redskins caught seven passes in the Redskins 34-3 shellacking of the Denver Broncos. Monk's last reception, a 10- yarder, was the 820th of his 13 year career. With 820 receptions, Monk is now the NFL's all-tim:, leader. The record was previously held by Seattle’s Steve Largent. WELCOME BACK: Philadelphia Flyer, Eric Lindros, made his homecoming to Quebec on Tuesday. It was not a lovefest in Quebec however, as the Quebec fans felt that Lindros insulted the city wheh he refused to sign with the team. Lindros scored two goals yet, the Flyers' lost 6-3 as the Nordiques scored three goals in the final four minutes of the game. Sophomore forward Alan Cornell scored the first goal with an assist by sophomore forward Mark Fiorelli. "The game was going both ways until the first goal was scored. It boosted the team's confidence," said Sean Tucker, a sophomore forward. "Winning is like a heart beat , you have to feel it." -Coach Dennis Grace Tucker scored the second goal, which he described as, "...icing on the cake," with an assist from Cornell. Both the defense and offense worked together well to enable the team to win. The defense played extremely well, giving the offense opportunities to score. As Cornell said, "The best offense is a good defense." Rusty Brown who played goal keeper, saved a penalty kick. Pam is a seventh semester senior Business Management major from Conncaut Lake. She attended Conncaut Lake High School and played four years on the volleyball team there. She was recruited by Coach Jan Wilson out of high school and is finishing her fourth year as a setter on the team.
