by Dave Chadwick
The Collegian
The Cycling Club has had a
rather successful Fall season.
Since classes started in late
August, racers from the club have
competed in seven races.
The first of these races was on
August 30 when Greg Cacali rode
to a strong finish in the
Allegheny Cycling Assoc. 40km
Time Trial.
Cacali covered the distance in 1
hour, 5 minutes, and 14 seconds,
which was 3rd place in the race.
On September 6th, four
members competed in the Corry
Classic Criterium in Corry, PA.
Bill Sides finished 14th in the
8 mile citizen race, while Cacali
and Pat Werner finish 11th and
14th in the 24 mile cat. 4 race.
Dave Chadwick finished 9th in
the 32 mile masters/cat.2-3
combination race.
The weekend of September 19-
20, the team traveled to the
Pittsburgh area for the ACA
Stage Race.
Stage one of the race was held
near Slippery Rock. Beckett won
the field sprint for first place in
the 12 mile citizen race, while
Martha Mercer finished 7th.
Cacali and Werner finished 3rd
and 10th in the 18 mile "C"
category race.
Chadwick finished in 3rd place
as part of a strong breakaway in
the 30 mile "A” category.
Stage two was held near
Burgettstown. Beckett did not
finish the 26 mile citizen race due
to a crash that required
hospitalization.
Cacali and Werner both rode to
strong finishes in their 26 mile
race, finishing 4th and 7th.
Chadwick finished 7th after a
getting a fiat tire early in his 56
mile race.
Stage three was a time trial
held in Avella. Cacali and
Werner finished 4th and 7th
respectively.
Chadwick did not compete in
stage three because he
accompanied Beckett to the
hospital. Beckett ended up with
three dislocated bones, one
broken bone, and 5 stitches all in
his right hand, along with a mild
concussion.
The overall standings had
Cacali in third place, and Werner
in 7th for the "C” category race.
On September 27, the highly
popular Presque Isle Time Trial
was held. Chadwick, Sides,
Derek Stangle, and Dr. Masteller
were among the 750 entrants.
In the 15-19 year old age
group. Sides covered the 12.5
miles in 34 minutes and 33
seconds, which earned him 9th.

giving him 16th place.
Chadwick rode to a narrow

seconds, and that was only 8
seconds faster than the second
place finisher.
Dr. Ed Masteller copped the
top spot in his age group once
again with a time of 32 minutes
and 41 seconds, for a average
speed of 22.9 mph.
On October 4, Werner traveled
to Stale College, PA to race in
the ACACIA Little 500 held on
the campus of Penn State. He
placed 15th in the 10 mile cat. 5
race.
And just last Sunday, there was
the Two-Man Time Trial held in
Harborcreek. Chadwick and
Cacali paired up to pull in a time
of 30 minutes and 43 seconds.
This earned them 2nd place in the
juniors category.
Dr. Masteller teamed up with
his son Mark, a 1982 Penn State
grad, and rode to 3rd place in the
masters category, with a time of
32 minutes and 33 seconds.
The Cycling Club is now
