Thursday, October 1, 1992 Gerald's Game Horror's latest past time by Pamela Baccus The Collegian Gerald's Game is the newest release from the master of horror, Stephen King. The main characters of the novel are Jessie and Gerald Burlingame. Jessie is the protagonist who is also a very strong character because although she is placed under an incredible amount of pressure, she doesn't break. She changes. Gerald, her husband, is the antagonist, he goes insane, while they play a typical sex game, when he locks her up to the bedposts, and ignores her demands to be set free. The plot of the story centers around Jessie's life. It centers around how she was abused as a child at the family's summer home and never got over it. This key piece of the plot allows you to see that Jessie never gets over how her father abused her. It also shows that whenever Jessie is faced with the possibility of telling what he did to her, she turns away in shame over how guilty she felt. She feels this way because her father brainwashed her. He threatened to tell her mother what happened. When he finally told that he wouldn't tell, he had her controlled to the point that she would never tell. It is part of the reason that these voices are eating away at her now. The voices kept trying to convince her that it wasn't her fault and that she should just forget it and go on with living her life. This might have worked if another event had not happened bringing it even more in focus. The scene was her brother's birthday party two years later. Her brother goosed her as his friends were egging him on, Jessie turned around and slugged him in the mouth. These events lead to what would later happen in the book. Her being chained to the bed and her eventual escape lead to the recuperation that she has needed since she was a child. Your previous reading of Stephen King novels will not prepare you for what you face as you read this book. The scariest thing about this book is that a fear from the past can relate to one of the present and have an incredible impact on the reader. Could this fear make the heroine give up on life? Can a woman who had survived so much, still survive the greatest trauma of her life? Those questions can only be answered when you read the book. The terror Jessie goes through is horrible, can you as a mere reader stand up to the same fears found in this book? Share your concerns and comments with us! Disney, however, makes Belle (who's voice is provided by theatrical music star Paige O'Hara) more of a woman of the 80's trapped in the 18th century. She longs for something more than what society will allow and searches for it in books. The town stud, Gaston (Richard White) has different DOOGIE HOWSER FOR PRESI DENT ! plans for our lovely Belle. He is determinded to make her his bride; for only she is beautiful enough for him. Once Belle is in the clutches of the Beast (who's voice is provided by Robby Benson), she begins to see that beneath that tough exterior, her captor is nothing more than a kitty cat. Helping them both along the way are the Beast's enchanted staff: Lumiere, the candelabra; Cogsworth, the mantel clock, and Mrs. Potts the teapot (with voices provided by Jerry Orbach, David Ogden Stiers, and Angela Lansbury respective-ly.) Thanks to Disney magic, Beauty and the Beast has never looked better.
