The construction of Behrend's
new- academic library has
encountered production set-backs
which will postpone its
opening date by two to three
months.
The building was originally
scheduled to open on January 9,
1993, but due to construction
problems, is estimated to open
in March of 1993.
"The set-back cannot be pin
pointed to one particular
problem," said John Ream,
director of operations. "It is
caused by a combination of
problems."
"The exterior of the
building, including the roof,
windows and brick, will be
completed by October," said,
John Burke, associate provost
and senior associate dean. "The
hursday, September 24,1992 Vol. XLI No. 2
interior can be developed during
the winter.”
When completed the new
library will contain an estimated
ISO to 200 thousand volumes.
"We're very excited," said
Elizabeth Smith, head librarian.

Behrend's present library
contains about 70 thousand
books and 900 serial flies.
"Right now, we're involved
in developing layouts for the
building and also
communicating with
professional library movers,"
said Smith.
"We're looking at an
improved (book) security
system as well."
Students will continue to be
able to access books and other
literary resources at University
Park as well as other colleges
within the Penn State system
through a greatly improved
LIAS system.
In spite of the delays in
construction of the library, the
cost of the project has not been
affected. It remains at $9
million.
