Page 8 Editorial Interest in budget process a good sign for Behrend There is no doubt that today's economy is a shaky one. The university is no more immune to the 'recession virus' than the federal government. However, the loss of Behrend's award winning Speaker Series has hit home. Not only did the series serve the community, it also gave students insight into the lives and accomplishments of people who have made some type of mark in the world. I was Behrend's claim to fame. Now it's little more than a memory. However, the experience with the Speaker Series has taught us all a very valuable lesson. We need to participate as much as we can in the budget process on campus. On Friday afternoon, around two hundred students showed up in the Wintergreen Cafe to meet with the University Future Committee. This was a record turn out for this type of meeting. Not only did it prove to the two representatives from University Park that the students at Behrend care about what happens to the programs on this campus, it also put an end to some of the rumors which have been floating around concerning the future of certain programs. Each department within Behrend is expected to turn in a 'scenario plan' for a permanent 10% reduction in their budget. So, though nothing has been done yet, the possibility for cuts in next year’s budget does exist. The university wouldn't go to the trouble of constructing 'scenario plans' for no reason. As students, we need to keep a close eye on what programs are incorporated into this contingency plan. Not only do we have to watch what goes on at this campus, we need to monitor our state representatives. Pennsylvania is still ranked 47th out of the 50 states in state funding per person for higher education. With less than two months left before election day, now it the time to find out how candidates stand on education and show them that at Behrend we care what happens to our programs. As I sat down to mull over how I was going to introduce myself to you... I thought about how nice it would be to omit all of my bad points. So I won't go into my "fly-by night" organizational skills and we'll just skip the details of my "creative" hand writing. Instead I'll concentrate on my assets. I can screw up a computer so that not even the experts can fix it. I also manage to forget the things I don't want to do leaving me to do the things I do want to do. For fun I interrogate tele-marketers (They hang up on me.) My hobbies include microwave cooking, and marathon vacuuming. You could classify me as a moderate (I have a cat and a dog). Though I spent four years in the Marines, I still walk on my toes occasionally. My five-year old daughter has a better sense of direction than I. So don't ask me how to get down-town. You might end up in Cleveland. My husband doesn't iron so you'll have to excuse my wrinkles. You've heard from me... let's hear from you. Please feel free to write letters on the subject of your choice. I'll look forward to hearing from you. How about some mail? If you would like to voice your views on a given issue, why not write a letter to the editor? The Collegian encourages letters on news coverage, editorial content or University affairs.
