Thursday, September 17, 1992 Lions Hal Coffe The Collegian Entering her twelfth season as Women's Head Volleyball coach, Jan Wilson takes on the task of modeling a young, inexperienced team into a well-seasoned, competitive one. On the eighth, the Lions traveled to Buffalo to take on Buffalo State. The Lions lost the first game 15-10. Buffalo State won the next two games, 16-14 to take the match in three straight games. The Lions wouldn't quit, but couldn't overcome the deficit. The Lady Lions opened their season on the fourth, at the Red Dragon Classic in Cortland. The Lions met Nazareth College in the opener of pool play. The team played well, but fell short losing in straight games. The next opponent in pool play was SUNY-Binghampton. Although the opponents were different, the results ended up the same. The final opponent in pool play was Alfred University. The Lions battled, but weren't as fortunate as they hoped. They fell in straight games. Comics on page 14. The opponent in the second round was the same Nazareth College team that defeated the Lions earlier. Unfortunately, the results were the same as the first match. The Lions returned from Cleveland winless, yet played well in all of the matches. They played each team in just under three hours and had some long rallies in each game. Coach Wilson said that there was a good team effort in all the games and the team showed a lot of spirit. The goal of any athletic team is to have a winning season. For the Lions, it is no different. They would like to achieve a winning season and also gain experience for the younger players. Coach Wilson commented that she would like to "use this year as a building year." She wants to get the younger players some experience and let them have a look at what college ball is all about. She also wants the team to develop their ball handling technique. Both have provided valuable leadership for the growing team. Unfortunately, Allshouse has been hampered by a knee injury and has had to sit out recent practices. She hopes to play in the Oberlin Tournament. The team has five freshmen. Coach Wilson feels that Jen Spencer and Julie Jeodeer will both help a lot. Spencer, said Coach Wilson, has a good attitude and has the advantage of coming from a good high school program. Wilson said the other three freshmen, Kim Ziner, Maureen Wojtowecz and Dodie Cornell, help a lot in practice and also have good attitudes, but Wilson thinks they need a little more experience. With no juniors on the team, the sophomores must step up and take some rule of leadership. Carrie Gzedjlca, Amy Stranahan, and Susan Stearns have all found time in the line up at some point or another and have played well.
