Page 10 Men’s This past week proved to be a tough week for Lions baseball, finishing with a 1-5 record. The Lions faced tough teams from Grove City, Case Western Reserve, and Washington & Jefferson. Grove City took both games of the doubleheader against the Lions, defeating them 9-3 and 15- In the first of the two games against Grove City, Bill Weimer went seven innings giving up eight hits, three strikeouts, and six earned runs. The Lions came off the bench hot in the first inning, scoring three runs. Chris Myers and Shawn Kiepps each had an RBI. Unfortunately, the Lions couldn't find any more power behind the bat. At the plate, Jim Tibor went two for three, putting his average at .206. In the second game, Andy Wheeling pitched four innings, giving up four hits and five earned runs. Dave Shrock and Andy Wheeling picked up an RBI each in the effort. In the effort against Case Western Reserve, the Lions split Baseball predictions for N.L. East Matt Cissne The Collegian Once again sports fans it is that time of year again when the grass is green, the skies are clear and most importantly, our national pastime is back. Baseball. The 1992 campaign should be quite interesting since there are no dominant teams. The division that looks to be the most exciting is the National League East. The N.L. East is stocked with teams that are full with question marks. The division champion Pirates, have lost Bobby Bonilla, a hitter capable of hitting 30 homeruns and 130 RBl's every season. They have also lost one of the best left handed pitchers in the game, John Smiley, and a relief pitcher, who is capable of 20 saves, Bill Landrum. However, the Pirates are still strong. Barry Bonds will be a free agent after this season and he knows that with every homerun he can demand half of the nation's deficit. Bonds is joined in the outfield by former gold glove winner Andy Van Slyke. Any team with those two in the outfield is capable of big things. The big news in New York is the 30 million dollar man, Bonilla. The Mets have a lineup that is also capable of big things. Howard Johnson is a proven force and the old reliable Eddie Murray is at first. Third basemen Dave Magadan is a .300 hitter and has baseball record hits 4-9 the twinbill Once again, the Lions came off the bench hot in the first inning, picking up two runs. Case Western came back strong in the fourth inning with a big six run rally. The Lions retaliated in the top of the fifth with a four run burst, but it wasn't enough to top Case Western. Case Western grabbed the first game, 9-7. Chris Myers went 4-4 at the plate in the first game, but it wasn't enough to pull the Lions through. The second game went a full 11 innings, but the Lions learned from the first game, showed their strength, and outlasted Case Western, defeating them 5-4. The Lions played a tough game, scoring four runs in the first nine innings. The most important run though, came in the top of the 11th inning. Against the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson, the Lions couldn't find the win. The Presidents swept the doubleheader, 5-2,15-2. At the {date, Dave Shrock wait 3-3. some pop in his bat The Mets problem is their defense. The Mets are just as likely to finish first in errors as they are to finish first in homeruns. The Mets also have question marks at pitcher and catcher. Charlie O'Brien is the worst cather in the league and whether Dwight Gooden can come back from last season's injury is yet to be seen. The Philadelphia Phillies have changed their uniforms and their attitudes, and the Phil's are ready to win. The Phils have the most potential, but right now it is just that, potential. The pitching staff is young as is the left side of the infield. Pitchers Terry Mulholland, Mitch Williams and Barry Jones are the only proven stars, but youngsters Andy Ashby, Tommy Greene and Tyler Greene are ready to become the future stars they are projected to be. The Phil's offense is lead by John Kruk and Lenny Dykstra. Kruk had a career season last year and is ready to repeat it. If Dykstra stays healthy, he is the best leadoff hitter in the game. Catcher Darren Daulton, third baseman Dave Hollins and outfielders Wes Chamberlain and Dale Murphy should provide the power neccessary. The Phil's major problems are their lack of speed and their questionable defense. St Louis is the hardest team to figure out on one hand they lode like the strongest team but, if Sports Call him 'Babe': Catcher Bill Graham discusses game strategy with fii baseman Shawn Krepps during the Washington & Jefferson game. you look at them again they look like losers. The pitching is strong with Jose DeLeon and Joe Magrane. The offense looks productive with outfielders Pedro Guerrero, Jose Felix and Ray Lankford. The left side of the infield is strong because of "The Wizard" Ozzie Smith. The Cardinal's also have a strong bullpen. They just don't have the look of a winner, but in the N.L. East they may be good enough. The Cub's have no pitching. They lost George Bell and will not break any stolen base records. Ryne Sandberg just signed a monstous contract and maybe set for a less than spectacular season and Andre Dawson is not getting any younger. Mark Grace is the lone shining star on a team that can never seem to win and I wouldn't count on that changing this year. The Expos are improved, but they are still not talented. They have plenty of speed but that's it. They are moving up, but they need time. Predictions— 1. Philadelphia-believe. it or not their young talent is good enough. 2. St. Louis-will challenge all season. 3. Pittsburgh-will fade at the end. 4. New York-no team unity, no defense. 5. Montreal-better but still bad 6. Chicago-better luck next year.
