Lion tennis sweeps Elmira, 9-0

On March 29, the men's tennis
team defeated Elmira.
"It was cold, but we turned up
the heat," said freshman David
Kim.
Kim, along with the rest of the
Penn State-Behrend men's tennis
team, braved the cold elements to
defeat Elmira 9-0.
The real strength of the team
comes from it's depth. Although
young, what the men's tennis
team lacks in experience, they
make up for with hard work and
determination.
They showed this on Sunday
when sophomore Eric Good
started the team off with a 6-4, 6-
1 victory. Second singles
sophomore Jonathan Chase
followed suit with a 6-4, 6-2
win.
"I think that the elements
bothered our opponents. We
made it a point not to let it get to
us, and we got the job done,” said
third singles team captain Chuck
Keenan.
"I don't think that we've really
been challenged yet," Keenan
continued, "I'm looking forward

Lady Lions softball faces tough
season; 30 games in 24 days

So you think you have it
rough?
Bogged down with tests, papers
and reading?
Try playing 30 softball games
in 24 days on top of your work.
The Lady Lions softball team
is doing just that. Because of the
late winter, many of the Lady
Lions' games had to be
rescheduled and they now find
themselves in the position of

playing four doubleheaders a
week for the remainder of the
season.
The weather has been an
obstacle in the team's
development
"We got back from Florida and
we had to play indoors for three
weeks and then the first time
outdoors was against the ninth
ranked team in the country (Mt.
Union)", said coach Brett Banker.
Banker has his own version of
Michigan's "Fab Five".
Five freshman currently start
for the Lady Lions.
Keenan easily defeated his
opponent 6-1, 6-1.
The winning streak continued
on down the line with freshman
Karl Van Tassel. "I am really
enjoying the team's success,"
remarked Van Tassel.
At fifth singles, sophomore
Craig Edwards showed his
strength by crushing his
opponent 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Joe Dess had an easy
time at sixth singles with a 6-1,
6-0 victory.
"The team is very optimistic
about the season," remarked
Dess.
Behrend continued to dominate
in the doubles, the team's real
strength.
Keenan and Chase won easily
at first doubles, 6-0, 6-0. Good
and Edwards remained victorious
by winning 7-5, 6-1. Van Tassel
and Dess captured third doubles
with a 6-1, 6-0 win.
This is Behrend's second
consecutive match with a 9-0
victory.
The main reason for the Lions
success is obvious to Coach
Gallegos.
"We came to play, they came
to be seen," remarked Gallegos.
In a sport like tennis, that can
make all of the difference.
"It is hard for the freshman to
mature playing indoors
everyday," Banker said.
On Tuesday, the Lady Lions
dropped both games of a
doubleheader to nationally ranked
Allegheny College, 5-1 and 6-0.
Allegheny pitcher Jodi
Robinson gave up only four hits
and struck out eight in the first
half of the doubleheader. The
Lady Lions got their only run of
the game in the sixth.
Sophomore Kim Boyd reached
base on a single. Freshman Terry
Pegher advanced Boyd with
another base hit and then
Robinson walked Junior Darcie
Bradley and Freshman Karen
Strait to get Behrend on the
board.
Allegheny pitcher Shayne
Kozak threw a one-hitter in the
second game.
"She (Kozak) threw strikes.
She only had oije strike out, but
we could not get the base hits.
We hit some balls right on the
button, but they were hit directly
at people," Banker said.
Last Saturday the Lions split a

opener 11-1 as Mt. Union
exploded for eight runs in the
second.
The Lady Lions came back and
won the second game 7-2 behind
winning pitcher, Freshman Casey
Puttemann. The Lady Lions
trailed Mt. Union 2-0 in the fifth
before Bradley hit a two-out, two
run double to even the score.

and is second on the team in runs
scored. Boyd leads the team in
runs scored and is second on the
team in hits.
The pitching staff is led by
Puttemann and Sophomore Lori
Wolfe who have combined for
five wins.
The Lady Lions' next home
game is Sunday against NAIA
