Learning one of life's
lessons lately
On the plane to Germany last year, I met a really smart
man. I don't mean book-smart, I mean experience smart.
He told me a lot of stories which, at the time, I didn't
really understand or even care to try. I was scared and
nervous and excited about my semester abroad, and I
didn't want to be bothered with meaningless stories.
I realize now that the stories weren't meaningless -
they were very important. I’d like to share one of them
with you,
When this man, Andrej, began sailing, he had a lot of
people to help him and to sail with him around the usual
area. As he became more comfortable, he began to sail
further out. Most of the others went along with him to see
what was out there.
Soon, he was no longer satisfied, and wanted to go
further. Many of his old companions hung back. They
were afraid. This saddened Andrej for a little while, and
he wondered if he, too, should stay back where he started
with the others. He decided that he had to go on.
Several people joined him. As they sailed further, new
people started to sail with him. But when he needed
something more again, the same thing happened as before
- the others tried to hold him back. He went on, though,
despite being alone and soon found new companions to
sail with.
When he went home, his old sailing buddies were still
there. Some welcomed him, but some didn't speak to him
because they thought he had become too good for them.
You don't have to sail to understand the story. And as
graduation approaches, it's starting to become more and
more real. I will soon find out who my real friends are.
They'll be the ones supporting me from far away, just like
I'll be supporting them.
How about some mail?
