and students put into making the
series a success.”
Shields said institutions such
as Florida State University,
UCLA, Cornell University and
Ohio State University make up
NACA, as well as small
community colleges and junior
colleges.
"NACA presents eight or nine
'big' awards a year,” said Shields.
"The Distinguished Lecture
Program Award is one of the
ways NACA tries to work
lectures and speakers into college
activities. While many of the
awards center around
entertainment events, speaker
series aren’t something that is
done that often. That’s something
NACA is trying to change."
Shields added awards like this
give Behrend's Speaker Series
more credibility in the speaker
circuit.

series unique among its
competitors is the way it's
chosen.
"We book the speakers by
using a bidding system, which is
something most schools don't
do,” said Shields. "A committee
of faculty, staff and students puts
together a list of requirements:
the budget we have, how many
speakers we need, when we need
them and the areas we want them
to address."
The next step in the process is
to bid out Behrend's package to
seven of eight speaker agencies
across the country. Their
mission: to develop a speaker
series for Behrend.
"It’s a good system," said
Shields. "Since the speaker
agency gets the entire contract,
not only do we have a lot of
bargaining power with them, but
they're more motivated to go out
and get the best speakers
possible.”
