Scholarships keep
students in the green
(Continued from Page 1)
system. The Academic
Scholarship Application can be
picked up in the Financial Aid
Office and must be turned in by
April 1 of this semester.
Among the twenty-five
scholarships offered by Behrend
are the Joseph H. DeFrees
Scholarship, for outstanding
students whose home is in
Warren County and attending
Penn State-Behrend.
The Petersen Scholarship is
for full-time students enrolled or
planning to enroll at Penn State-
Behrend who've graduated from
Erie's East High School and hold
a GPA of at least 2.8.
There is also the Donald and
Dorothy Leslie Scholarship for
outstanding students from Erie
County enrolled at Penn State-
Behrend.
The ten-member Behrend
Scholarship and Awards
Committee attempts to disperse
the money to students with high
GPAs. Last year, a 3.7 was the
lowest GPA a student could hold
to receive money. Some of the
scholarships require that you
meet certain residency
requirements but may open up to
the general student body if
eligible students do not apply.
"Some of the scholarships
have some more specific
requirements and we have an
attachment to that scholarship
application which asks more
specific questions," said Kate
Delfino, assistant director of
Financial Aid.
One new scholarship will be
available in the fall for
financially needy students. The
Pauline and Christ Scott
Scholarship was set up in
memory of Christ Scott, the self
made businessman who was bom
in Greece and made his home in
Erie in 1940. The scholarship
awards will vary according to

The main function of the

MOSCOW -- Russians haven't been too
successful in hiding their disappointment
over the U.S. humanitarian aid airlifted to
them in the past week. Russian citizens
expressed mixed reactions over the $7B
million worth of surplus medicine ~ and
foodstuffs left over from the Gulf war --
gratitude for the supplies, disappointment
over lack of quantity and a bruised national
ego. "Honestly, I think it's shameful. In
principle, our country is like America. Look
low the government has brought us!"
said Vladimir Boiko, a 20-year-old forklift
operator.

HARRISBURG -- Pennsylvania's
redistricting plan will more than likely wind
up being decided by the Commonwealth Court.
The Pennsylvania legislature, scrambling to
restructure the Commonwealth's legislative
districts to conform with the latest U.S.
Census, has stalled over partisan conflict. The
House's plan is being ignored by the Senate
and vice versa. Legislators have already
missed one deadline, forcing presidential
candidates to wait longer to circulate their
petitions.
INDIANAPOLIS Mike Tyson reported to
his probation officer Tuesday for a pre
sentencing hearing following his conviction
of one count of rape and two counts of deviate
conduct. Tyson, accused of raping an 18-year
old Miss Black America contestant last
summer, will be sentenced on March 6.
ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA - Dr. Cecil
Jacobsen is charged with 52 counts of fraud
and perjury after being accused of deceiving
some patients into thinking they were
pregnant when they were not and artificially
inseminating as many as 75 others with his
own sperm. Several patients testified
Jacobsen told them they were pregnant --
contrary to other physician's opinions.
PITTSBURGH - Long -stem roses ranging
from $3O to $7O a dozen arc still the rage
during this thorny recession. According to
Alvi Voigt, agricultural economics professor
at Penn State University, consumers regard
valentine flowers as a necessary part of their
budget. Other sweetheart gifts have not fared
so well. Greeting cards, jewelry, and even
dinner reservations have been affected by
the economy's weak heart.
