Lions burned by Matt Cissne The Collegian The Lions have guards, forwards and centers. Maybe they should add an exorcist to their roster to take care of Demons, especially Dyke: College Demons. On Monday night, the Lions four-game win streak was snapped in Cleveland by the Dyke Demons, 85-75. The Lions led 49-40 at the half, but they came out slow in the second half and were ravaged by the Demons. "We struggled all night. In the second half our defense was poor and our shots wouldn’t fall," said point guard Don Plyler. Byron Thome paced the Lions with 17 points while Rick Clark added 13. Plyler, Rob Hunt and Rich Buzulka also scored in double figures. The Demons shot 58 percent from the field while Behrend shot 46 percent. The Lions out rebounded Dyke 34-30. Buzulka grabbed 12 boards to lead the Lions. The loss to Dyke followed a double overtime win against Waynesburg College last Wednesday in front of an emotional home crowd. Hunt scored with eight seconds left in the second overtime to clutch a 71-68 win, The Lions were up 56-53 near the end $f regulation, but Joe Johnson nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. In overtirhe, the teams played tight. With 16 seconds left. "Our goal is to get to the playoffs. We need to win all of our remaining games to achieve it. If we can stop them from doing what they want to do, we can do what we want to do." -Don Plyler Sophomore Guard Waynesburg sunk two free throws to take a 64-61 lead. Coach Fred Paulsen called timeout and set up a three-pointer for Plyler. The play worked. This followed a disappointing loss to Division II Mercyhurst College last Wednesday night. The Lions trounced on the Westminster Titans as soon as the ball went up. A Krista Hershner 12-footer, followed by a Kim Boyd jay, sent the squad to a 12-2 lead in the first five minutes. The defensive pressure was too much for Westminster to handle. The Lions were all over the court and were simply too much for the Titans. The Lions bolted to a 41-18 halftime advantage in the last 15 of the first half. Behrend's "D" smothered Westminster, giving up a measley 18 points. Sophomore Michelle Grover, who had a career 14, carried the Lions in the first half with eight points. Forward Becky Swartz hit a pair of long distance bombs to increase the halftime spread. The second half was much of the same, a couple times over. After the intermission the Lions forced their opponents into twenty turnovers and they held the Titans to 37 percent from thfe field. Defensively the stats were terrific. For the game, Behrend stole the ball 25 times and made them turn it over 38 times. Demons wouldn't fall. Waynesburg got the rebound and just when things were beginning to look bad, Clark tipped the ball into Thorne's hands. Thorne caught the ball and threw up a three. His shot swished throught the net just as the buzzer went off. Clark hit five three-pointers and finished with 25 points. Plyler scored 16 and Thome and Respress added 10 apiece. The Lions won despite shooting only 31 percent to the Yellow Jacket's 37 percent. Behrend out rebounded Waynesburg 51-45 as Respress grabbed 14. The Lions are now 12-10, with four games left to play. Plyler said that they will probably need to win them all to get a playoff spot. "Our goal is to get to the playoffs. We need to win all of our remaining games to achieve it," commented Plyler. The Lions will need to play good, strong defense. "If we can stop them from doing what they want to do, we can do what we want to do," added Plyler. The Lions have two remaining home games. They take on Thiel tonight and next Monday they have another game against Dyke. As usual, a balanced scoring ledger accounted for Behrend's offensive production. Every player got into the scoring column. Grover netted 14 and grabbed four offensive rebounds. Boyd tossed in 12 to go along with four steals. Swartz finished with twelve also, while Michele Beisler had nine, and Heather Shearer eight.
