Their seven-to-six vote also temporarily put an end to a group's hope to start another sorority on campus. At last week’s meeting, the Panhellenic Council presented a motion to SGA senators to extend a cap on the number of sororities that could form on campus, while the Interfratemity Council asked for a limit on the number of fraternities that could form. The ban on sororities was to extended six months while the ban for fraternities grew to one year. Last night's vole concerned one group’s efforts to have SGA rescind their cap on sororities. Members of the Panhellenic Council wanted the measure to remain intact to help members of an already-existing sorority to become national. "We have nothing against the sorority interest group (the organization trying to establish a sorority on campus)," said Kristen Osiecki, president of the Panhellenic Council. "Expansion is something we arc willing to do, but right now we are obligated to Delta Phi Epsilon and the other established sororities... we're not saying no, but we're obligated to others at the moment." Sigma Theta Chi is the sorority which is trying to gain national recognition. After their pledge period to the national organization, they would be known as Delta Phi Epsilon. The cap is designed to protect them from competition while they build a membership. According to Osiecki, the sorority interest group cannot be admitted yet because the Panhellenic Council is under obligation to support Delta Phi Epsilon first. "The National Panhellenic Council's bylaws say we are obligated to support Delta Phi Epsilon first," she said. "We’re afraid that a new sorority starting right now may take away members from another sorority trying to go national." But according to members of the sorority interest group, that wouldn't happen. "I think there is a need now for another interest group," said Courtney Donelly, spokesperson (continued on page 2)
