Page 12 Twins clinch Series (In case you didn't notice...) Ron Doin The Collegian The Minnesota Twins won the World Series for the second time in four years. The Twins edged out the Atlanta Braves 1-0 in the 10th inning of Game 7. Minnesota pitcher Jack Morris hurled a 10-inning shutout and Gene Larkin hit the game winning single over a drawn-in outfield in the bottom of the 10th inning with the bases loaded. Morris, in three World Series starts, won two games (1 no decision) and had a combined ERA of 1.17. He also deservingly walked away with the The game was just like the Series; it was a dog fight. Both teams had gone from finishing in last place the previous year to first place and the World Series this year. When it came down to the wire, the Twins got the breaks they needed and capitalized on them. Either team could have won the game and the series. World Series stars for the Twins included: Jack Morris, Kirby Puckett, Scott Lcius, and rookie of the year candidate Chuck Knoblauch. Puckett starred both defensively and offensively. He won Game 6 with a winning home run and also made a great catch on a Ron Gant line drive at the wall. Though Minnesota won the Series, Atlanta had nothing to be ashamed of. They survived an 0-2 lead by the Twins and rallied to win three straight at home. The Braves actually led in combined ERA, batting average, and RBl's. Lonnie Smith (filling in for Otis Nixon) hit 3 home runs in 3 consecutive games. Mark Lemke batted an amazing .450 in the World Series. Regardless of the outcome, everyone was treated to a phenomenal World Series. It was continuously entertaining and will not be forgotten by baseball fans. It was just too bad that one team had to lose.
