The intramural sports
program, coordinated by the
Athletic Department's latest
addition, Rob Wittman, has
drawn faculty members and
hundreds of students to the
playing fields.
During the past few weeks,
incredible numbers of people
have been gathering down on the
athletic fields, sand volleyball
courts, and tennis courts Monday
through Thursday evenings.
"I didn't know what to expect
when I first started," explained
Wittman. "And so far, I haven't
encountered any problems. My
officials and student supervisors
are doing an excellent job," he
continued.

champions, The Ball and Chains.
Mother Nature has also been
kind to Wittman this year. He
hasn't had to cancel or postpone a
single game, and the Provost's
Golf Tournament, held in Mid-
October, was played on a sunny,
mid-60 degree day.
"It takes time, and you have to make the time, but I would
encourage everyone to participate. The faculty and staff have to
show that they can be good sports too.►►
"With 32 football teams, over
80 people for tennis, sand
volleyball, and cross country
running, I couldn't be any luckier
with the weather," smiled
Wittman.
Sports
The reasons for participating
in the intramural program arc
varied.
The majority of those
participating in the intramurals
program played sports in high
school, but when they reached
college, they either felt that a
collegiate sport would take up
too much time, or else they
weren't good enough.
Many other people arc drawn
to intramural sports because it
enables them to meet other
people with the same interests,
they can keep up with their
health, and it's a good break from
studying.

For faculty members though,
the reasons for playing can be
quite different.
"It take.t time, and you have
to make the time, but I would
encourage everyone to participate.
The faculty and staff have to
show that they can be good
sports too," said Fred Anzivino,
WPSE station manager and
pitcher for the co-ed softball
team, Staff Infection.
For Wittman though, the
most important thing in
intramurals is to have fun.
"From what I've seen down on
the fields, the participants have
had a great time. . . and that's
what I like to see," remarked
Wittman.
