Page 12 Men's soccer loses seven straight b Dan Zahniser The Collegian The Behrend men's soccer team lost its seventh game in a row last Saturday. The Lions were defeated by State University of New York- Brockport in double overtime. Like most of the other losses, it was a very close game, but the Lions still came up short 2-1. "Our record is deceiving, most of the games have been close and could have gone either way," said junior Rick Nese. The Behrend team took the lead early in the first half with a Lady Lions b Paul Denim The Collegian This past weekend, the Lady Lions softball team participated in the Second Annual Gannon Invitational. This fall tourney produced an extremely tough field. The competitions consisted of Div. I Youngstown State, Div. II Gannon University, and National powerhouse Allegheny College. The Lions finished with a 1-3 record against three solid programs. In the first game, Behrend played outstanding, defeating Allegheny by a 10-0 mark. Senior Melanie Dunn and junior Darcie Bradley paced Behrend with RBI basehits in the first. The Lions put the Gators away in the sixth with six runs. Saturday's second game had Gannon upending Behrend 13-0. Gannon's Judie Bishop spun 5- IN THE BLEACHERS by Steve Moore Much to the dismay of jousting officials, Sir Leonard would leap from his steed, run to his opponent and perform his infamous "skewer goal by sophomore Rusty Brown and the assist coming from Mike Whiteman. The Lion defense was tough and held SUNY-Brockport until late in the first half when they scored on a corner kick and evened the score at 1-1. "They were tough with a lot of skill and talent," said Rusty Brown. "As a team, we played well but we just couldn't take advantage of the opportunities we had." "We definitely deserved to win but the ball just isn't bouncing our way this year," added Dave Moyak. 1-3 in Gannon Tourney hiuer thru five In Sunday's opener, the Lady Lions lost a hard fought battle to Div. I Youngstown State. The scholarship program of Youngstown came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Lions 5-2. Freshman Karen Strait led off the second with a homerun shot to right center, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. Sue Mazur singled, was sacrificed to second, and scored on Sue Dyer's 2-out triple. In the finale, Gannon beat Behrend 3-1. The lone Behrend run was plated after Mazur tripled and then scored on Kathy Kane's safety squeeze. The 6th inning again proved to be fatal for the squad as the Knights scored the game winner on 2-hits and an error. "Overall I am very happy with the weekend, the kids played hard, and it (the tournament) served its purpose," said head coach Brett 1991 "-cu.* mocha Sonnces au 0 cms ~..Serreo 4.4 u). • 1 / 4 • . ; N N "••••-/ "‘", IMMO dance.'' Behrend dominated most of the game but failed to capitalize on a lot of opportunities. The second half was scoreless, as was the first overtime period. As the game trudged on into the second overtime period, fatigue was a factor on both sides. There was a defensive lapse which in turn ended up as the winning goal for the opponents. "The loss was difficult," stated Dave Moyak. "If we keep playing like we did today we are bound to be a force in our remaining games," added Rusty Brown. Banker The Lady Lions played very well considering they played against teams that had their finalized spring rosters participating in the tourney, whereas Coach Banker played twenty-three different softball candidates this weekend. Behrend lost three career .300 hitters from last year's 19-10 team to graduation. The fall schedule is over for the Lady Lions as they look forward to another outstanding spring.
