The Collegian SGA door opened Senators get acess to office keys b Loretta Russ The Collegian Last night student senate passed a measure giving voting members access to the SGA computer and ending a feud within SGA that's existed since the start of the semester. The measure allows council presidents, senators, and SGA staff members access to the SGA computer during daytime hours. Members without a key can borrow a copy from Student Activities and return it when they are done. The motion also allows for computer use after 5 p.m. when a key is requested from the SGA president or signed out from Police and Safety and returned after use. J.J. Scribner, Commuter Council president, said "The Recycling b Loretta Russ The Collegian Cardboard recycling containers have become a familiar sight around Behrend since last fall when Behrend's recycling program became full scale. As an , institution Behrend is required to recycle only three products. These include office paper, cardboard, and aluminum cans. Behrend has also chosen to recycle clear and colored glass, as well as bi-metallic cans. Recycling containers are be located in the various academic buildings as well as in the residence hall lobbies and on each floor. Still, students and administrators concede that there's always room for improvement. James Evans, an 11th semester engineering major said, "I think it works well, but the suites need bins also." Police Re Students report harassing and obscene phone calls Two seperate incidents of prank phone calls were reported to Police and Safety this week. On Tuesday, Sept. 17, a student reported that he had received harassing phone calls. On Monday of this week, several students reported both harassing and obscene phone calls. All incidents are currently being investigated. Property Damages On Sunday, Sept. 15, a student reported that her vehicle had been struck and damaged in the apartment parking lot. She "Technically, today, the measure is in effect... but I don't think this issue is settled. Next week I think there is a good possibility this issue will come up what will again. happen is anyone's guess." option is good enough to get us through the current difficult situation." grows at "The apartments need a better recycling system, " said Todd Everett, a 7th semester business and behavioral science major. Neither the suites nor the apartments have recycling containers at this time. James Bowen, Manager of Housing and Food Services said, "We cannot supply each individual apartment and suite with containers." However, there are plans to supply the suite and apartment lobbies with containers soon. Barb Dreves, a 3rd semester accounting major said, "I think it's (Behrend's recycling program) great, but we should also recycle plastic and newspaper." Currently the waste hauler does not have the facilities to recycle plastic. There are also no plans to recycle newspaper. The cost of hauling plastic and newspaper exceeds the demand and potential benefits. To be successful with the ort could supply no other information at the time. On Friday of the same week, a student reported that a tire on her vehicle had been damaged while parked in the F Lot. When the student attempted to inflate the tire she noticed that it had been A student reported the theft of his bicycle from the bike rack, on Monday, Sept. 23. The student reported that his bike, a red and black Schwinn Sierra, as well as his lock and chain were taken. Thursday, September 26, 1991 - Steve Fuller, SOC president However, questions about after-hours access from Police and Safety and concerns from Student Activities staff about key requests during the day has made the new policy unappetizing to some. "Technically, today, the measure is in affect, " said Steve Fuller, president of the Student Organization Council, "but I don't think this issue is settled. Next week I think there is a good possibility this issue will come up again. What will happen is anyone's guess." At the beginning of the semester council presidents asked to be issued keys to the SGA office in order to have access to the computer. David Mahoney, SGA president, turned down the request, citing office security as the reason for not issuing keys. Some student senators also (continued on page 3) Behrend recycling program, Claudia Brown, director of Pennsylvania energy center-operated by Penn State-Behrend said, "We need to aim for 100 percent participation in offices, food processing, classrooms, and student living areas." As of now the only benefit Behrend accomplishes through recycling is a cleaner environment. The waste hauler charges by the ton for each load transported and that weight is not always met. Therefore, until full participation is reached, Behrend will lose money. Behrend will eventually benefit financially once there is 100 percent participation in the program. "We have made a good start," Brown said. "If each person that recycles can convince someone else to, we will accomplish our goal." Residence Halls On Friday, a student was injured and lost consciousness after striking her head against a wall. The young lady was riding on the back of a fellow student when he turned too fast and she hit the wall. Earlier that day, a light pole was knocked over between Lawrence and Niagara Residence Halls. This incident is still under investigation. Lastly, on Thursday Sept. 9, Police and Safety responded to a fire alarm in Perry Hall. It proved to be a false alarm.
