"What happened was we had
an unusually high number of
students move in and stay in,"
said James Bowen, manager of
Housing and Food Service.
"The result is having to put
students in non-traditional
rooms -- television lounges,
study rooms or an extra person
in a dormitory room -- on a
temporary basis."
Typically, administrators
plan on granting on-campus
housing to more students than
they have beds, knowing that
some students will transfer to a
different campus or university
without notifying Behrend.

Ground broken
for new library
Facility to be ready in two years
Eric Dinter

After 20 years of waiting and planning, ground was broken
this summer for Behrend's new $ll million library/academic
complex, with construction expected to be finished in two
years.
"This is truly a major step toward fulfilling Penn State's
mission in northwestern Pennsylvania," said Provost and
Dean John M. Lilley. "This new complex will hold twice as
many volumes as our current library and broaden the horizons
of students for years to come."
The library has faced a series of delays due to funding
delays and building design problems. It has taken the
university almost 20 years to secure funds from the state for
the new complex, "with much of that effort being spearheaded
by retired Pennsylvania State Representative Bernard
Dombrowski," Lilley said. Currently, the library is $3 million
overbudget, with additional funds expected from the university
to make up the difference.
The library has also undergone various design changes,
including the addition of a clock tower. The new library will
include class rooms, quiet study areas, offices and a television
studio.
