Behrend Briefs
"Video and Games Night II," sponsored
by IVCF, will be held tonight in Reed 119 from 7
p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The feature film will be The
Princess Bride. The club photo will be taken at 8:50
p. m.
Student Tutors are still needed for the PEPP
Program at the Wayne and Wilson Middle Schools.
Although students must provide their own
transportation, tutors are paid $5 per hour. Contact
Donna Banks at 871-6001 for more information.
Campus Ministry is seeking students to serve
on the Protestant Campus Ministry Board, which
will meet monthly during the 1991-92 academic year.

The Admissions Office is looking for
volunteers willing to assist them during the Alumni
Admissions Conference beginning Friday, June 7,
until Sunday, June 8. Free Behrend T-shirts will be
given to volunteers. If you are interested in
volunteering during any of these three days, please
contact the Admissions Office at 6100.
The Campus Ministry is sponsoring a Final
Exam Cookie Break. Free cookies will be available
to all students as follows: Perry 8-9 p.m. Tuesday,
May 7. Niagara 8-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 8.
Lawrence 8-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 8.
The Codependency and Chemical
support groups will be continuing into the summer

Lifeguard Workstudy positions are available
this summer for Behrend's pool. For more

Awards Ceremony honors 476

"Unsung Hero" Award for his
work while Lori Royer, SGA
secretary and fourth semester
Communication major, was
awarded the Student Government
President's Award.
Other student government
awards included The Guy W.
Wilson Award, given to
Christopher Hilden for his service
to Behrend outside the classroom,
Best Student Organization
Advisor, awarded to Mr. David
Stuntz, instructor of music, and
Best Student Organization, which
was presented to the Inter Varsity
Christian Fellowship.
In the Special Service Awards
category, students were selected
for their 'outstanding qualities of
character, scholarship, leadership
and citizenship." These students
were nominated for awards by
faculty, staff, and student leaders.
Luis Mongil was presented
with the Irvin H. Kochel Award,
while both Kenneth Bunting and
Steven Smith received the
Thomas H. Turnbull Award.
The Eric A. and Josephine
Walker Award was presented to

Officer responds to bicycle accident
On Monday, a patrol officer
heard screams for help coming
from the gorge area. Upon
investigation, two children were
found on the embankment west
of the D-Lot. A twelve - year -
old male was riding his bike in
the gorge with two other friends
when he lost control of the bike
on a steep hill and crashed. One
of the boys was covered with
mud and blood. He had a huge
cut over his right eye and was
complaining of pain in his
shoulder. He was laid down

Solem was presented with the
John W. Oswald Award for
Speech, Journalism, and the
Mass Media.
The final award in this
category, the Benjamin A. Lane
Outstanding Service award, went
to Mrs. Cathy Mester, professor
of Speech Communication.
Three Penn State-Behrend
professors received awards for
their work in teaching, advising
and research.
Dr. Michael Simmons,
associate professor of English,
won the Penn State-Behrend
Council of Fellows Excellence in
Teaching Award. The Guy W.
Wilson Award for Excellence in
Advising was given to Dr.
Kenneth Louie, assistant
professor of Economics, and Dr.
Anthony A. Salvia, professor of
Industrial Engineering, was
awarded the Penn State-Behrend
Council of Fellows Faculty
Research.
David Shields, assistant dean
of Student Services and
coordinator of the ceremony, said
this year's ceremony was bigger
than others in years past.
"Compared to past years, the
ROTC unit closes
administrative duties and
working on security
clearances," Cmfcheck said.
The last member of the
cadre, Captain Fry, left in
December for the University
of North Carolina at
Charolette to serve as an
ROTC instructor. "Next
fall," said McCarthy, "she'll
take over as the officer in
charge of their program."
Tina Luke, the ROTC
secretary, plans on staying
with the Penn State system.
"I've loved every minute
I've been here," she said.
"The cadets really made it a
lot of fun -- they're like my
down and First Aid was
administered by the officer.
Brookside Volunteer Fire
Company was called and he was
transported to St. Vincent
Medical Center where he was
admitted. One of the others was
transported but not admitted.
Underage drinker
cited
Last Thursday, a student was
cited for underage drinking. An
officer spotted the girl sitting on
the curb near Lawrence Hall, and
when he approached to see if she

increase in the number of student
organizations giving out awards
and a few additional special
awards," he said. "The total
number of people present
increased from about 600 to more
than 900."
When asked if he ever thought
about splitting the ceremony into
two, one for academics and one
for activities, Shields said there
are a number of reasons why he
doesn't think that should be done.
"There are only a few times the
campus community comes
together to recognize people who
have made contributions.
"If you divide the ceremony
into two, it may make one seem
more important than the other."
However, Shields did say he is
constantly looking for ways to
improve the event and he does
not want it to become too
impersonal. "We are going to
look at the Honors and Awards
Ceremony from top to bottom.
Some changes do have to be
made, but we always want to
maintain the quality and personal
touch that Behrend has."

reported
On two separate occasions last
Thursday, students reported lewd
and annoying phone calls. Both
students received the calls in
Lawrence Hall from an off -
campus phone.
