The women's basketball team ended a four game
losing streak with an impressive 63-43 win over Elmira
on Feb. 2. The Lady Lions were on top 29-17 at the half,
and kept up their momentum in the second half out
scoring Elmira 34-26 to cap the win.
Twelve players for Behrend scored in the game.
Leading the Lady Lions in scoring was Kim Boyd with 11
points. Melanie Dunn had 9 and Michele Beisler had 8.
Behrend's total field goal percentage for the game was
52%. Beisler, who is averaging 7.3 rebounds per game,
led Behrend on the night with 10 boards.
The Lady Lions were on at the free throw line hitting
11 of 14 for 78%. Dunn, averaging 78% from the charity
stripe, was perfect on the night, hitting five for five.
Sophomore Pam Torrelli commented on the win over
Elmira, "We really wanted to win. We didn't want to
travel five hours and come home with a loss."
Senior Tammy Altsman said, "Things went well
offensively, and everyone contributed in the game."
The win brought the lady hoopsters out of a four game
slump which peaked last Thursday against Oberlin
College.
Despite a 34-34 halftime score and a ten point lead in
the second half, Behrend suffered a 71-68 loss to Oberlin.
Ann Gilbert, a senior from Oberlin, was unstoppable. She
scored Oberlin's last nine points to give them their come
from behind win and ended with a personal total of 38
points. Behrend's last second 3-point attempt failed.
Boyd led the offense for Behrend scoring 18 points.
Anne Bonner ended the game with 14 points, while both
Heather Shearer and Dunn had 10 points. Dunn also had a
game-leading nine rebounds.
Behrend, field goal percentage ended-up at 48%. At the
free throw line, Behrend was 8-12 for 67%.
.Torrelli said, "We could not contain their star player,
Gilbert. In the second half, we didn't do well on either
defense or offense."
Behrend's current record is 6-13. Their next outing is
against Grove City College on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m.
in Erie Hall.
