The Collegian Date rape discussed at forum Goodstein explains how society influences the victimization of women b Lea Gotch The Collegian Dr. Lynne Goodstein, Director of the Women's Studies Program for Penn State, stressed awareness of the roles of both sexes in society and the victimization of women due to these roles during a lecture on rape and the victimization last night in the Behrend Theater. Goodstein focused on the issue of date rape. She said it is an issue that should be particularly of interest to dating and college-aged students. "The reality of rape is that it is important to know that the rapist could be sitting in this room," she said. Goodstein cited a study by Ms. magazine of 7,000 female students from 34 colleges across the country. The study found that 52 percent had experienced sexual victimization in the past year and 42 percent said the victimization took place in a dating situation. From these results, Ms. concluded that 1-in-8 women could expect to be raped before graduation from college. So far this year at University Park, 23 date rapes have been reported, with 8 taking place in Police Report: Compact discs, $5O stolen from residents of Niagara Hall Robert S. Geewski The Collegian Last Sunday a student reported to Police and Safety the theft of 30 to 40 compact discs from his room. The student also stated the case he uses to store these discs in was also taken from his room on the second floor of Niagara. fraternity houses, Goodstein said. These statistics probably do not show the extent of the problem, according to Goodstein. In one study four rapes were reported to the police out of 600 that occurred on a college campus. "In many ways society condones sexual aggression (by men)," Goodstein said. In American society, men are taught to be dominant, aggressive, and superior while women are taught to be dependent, sensitive to other's feelings, and subservient Goodstein explained. Because of this, men and women view sex differently. A woman may think she is simply being friendly to a man, but he may think she is wanting to have sex with him. "Women have to think about what is behind the words in any interaction with men," she said. "In sexual situations, when a woman says 'no' men often take it as meaning 'yes', so they keep going." Goodstein explained that date rape is ambiguous and that no two people will agree on where to draw the line on what constitutes rape. Characteristics of a date rapist This incident investigated. Also last Sunday. a student reported to Police and Safety the theft of $5O cash from his room on the second floor of Niagara. The student stated the cash was in his desk drawer when he last saw it. This incident is under investigation. Thursday, November 29, 1990 may include: belief in myths, like when a woman says "no" she means "yes"; viewing women as manipulative "gold diggers"; feeling little guilt and empathy; and involved in other violent activities Goodstein said. "Date rapes are often premeditated," she said. The rapist tends to pick out women who appear vulnerable. Other characteristics of women often raped include: young in age (high school through sophomore year of college); lack of assertiveness; and low self esteem. Alcohol is often involved. Women that physically fight back are more likely to get out of the situation than those that try to talk to or plead with their attacker, Goodstein said. According to Pennsylvania law, rape is sexual intercourse with a woman who is unable to give consent. This includes women who are mentally retarded, severely intoxicated, or unconscious. Therefore, Goodstein said, "It is possible to be a rapist without knowing it." Goodstein said it is important to understand that when date rape occurs it is a criminal act and may lead to a jail term. being On Friday Nov. 18, Police and Safety was called to assist a student in Niagara. The student had passed out in the bathroom. The student stated that she had the flu and was taken to Hamot Medical Center by two of her friends. Student Receives Assistance
