Scrib's last spike
Senior Erica Scribner ends her four year
volleyball career tonight in Erie Hall
Steven R. Smith
The Collegian
If you looked up the word
"intense" in the Behrend
dictionary, you might find Erica
Scribne,rs' name.
Scribner came to Behrend in
the Fall of 1987 from nearby
Iroquois High School. She came
here with very few dreams beside
getting a degree and maybe
playing some sports.
Today she is a senior who
will graduate in May with a
degree in communication, with
two Kathy Ott - Most Valuable
Volleyball Player awards, and
status as a 1990 2nd Team All-
American in softball.
Scribner has had a very
successful stay at Behrend, but
she is still relatively unknown
off of the court and field.
She can be categorized as one
of those people that you see all
the time, but don't really know
who they are.
"I've been here for four years,
but I don't really know as many
people as I thought I would by
now," says Scribner.
Scribner's non-notoriety this
year could easily be attributed to
the number of home games her
teams have played in 199th three.
One home softball game and two
home volleyball matches.
Her teammates and Scribner
herself admit that she is simply
not the stereotypical extrovert
athlete anyway.
"I guess I'm just not that out
going," says Scribner. "Some
people can make friends in a

Scribner's quiet off-court
demeanor hardly hints the
intensity that she shows on the
volleyball court, where she holds
the school record for spike kills.
Friend and teammate Pam
Allshouse commented on
Scribner's on-court outlook.
"You have to get used to her.
When she hits the court she
wants to win. She's come off bad
to a lot of people because they
don't know her, they don't know
how aggressive she is."
That aggression has not
always been as well controlled as
Scribnermay have hoped.
Roommate and fellow team
member Kellie Jordan is in her
third year of playing with
Scribner on the women's
volleyball team. She says that
her first impressions of Erica
wouldn't have led her to ask
about moiling together.
"I could see she really got into
the game," says Jordan. "I
couldn't stand her attitude at first.
It seemed like winning was all
that mattered. But after a while I
saw she was really a leader, that
that's just the way she motivates
herself and others."
That motivation has kept
Scribner in the upper ranks of
softball as well as volleyball,
where she broke the school record
for hits in a single season last
year.
"I'm not overly driven," says
Scribner commenting on all her
activities. "I'm not one of those
people who works 80 hours a
The Collegian
week on anything, I just have a
desire to succeed in what I do."
Scribner's battle td succeed
seems to be one that she has
won, but those coaches and
teammates that have known her
over the past four years say that
she has won a bigger battle, one
of maturity. Teammate Sara
Moss summed up the thought.
"Erica seems like she has
always been a good athlete and a
good player, but this year
especially, her attitude has
changed. She's more of a team
player. She's thinking about
people, not just winning."
Scribner will play in front of
the home crowd at Erie Hall for
the last time tonight as a Behrend
spiker.
"I'll miss it," says Scribner.
"It's upsetting that it's over, but
Fm just glad I could come to a
school where I could play for four
years. We didn't win all the time,
but we really did try."
Scribner's plans for the future
are to help her softball team
make it to nationals this year, a
goal she may just get the chance
to satisfy.
After graduating she plans on
attending graduate school in
Florida where she hopes to
pursue a degree in journalism or
mass media.
In a world where athletics
have come to be used on resumes
simply as sources of experience
in "teamwork" and "leadership",
it is good to see that maturity has
made it's way into one Behrenil
athlete's curriculum.
