Behrend also plays an exhibition game against Ryerson Polytech on Sunday at 2 p.m. in newly renovated Erie Hall. The Lions defeated the Rams last year by a score of 110-90. "It's nice to have an exhibition game treated like a real game," commented first year Head Coach Fred Paulsen about the meeting with Ryerson. Behrend has six players coming back. They include tri captains Randy Baughman, who finished 13th in the country in assists averaging 6.6 per game, Rick Demski, the winner of the Gary Borowy Rebounding Award last year, and Chris Viscuso, who missed last year because, of academics. ' Also returning are Junior Jeff Cowan, Sophomore Mich Buzolka, and Sophomore Damon Floyd. Baughman, who was the MVP of last year's team said, "We're prepared to play, but we'll know a lot more about the team Sports once we play a couple of games. We still have to learn more about the coach, his ways, and his philosophy about the game." Baughman said a problem with last year's squad was that, "We became too individualized. Coach Paulsen believes that the team comes first, individuals second. Individuals will rise to the top with good team play." While stressing team play, Paulsen is also placing more emphasis on thg defensive end of the court this year. Cowan said, "We've been working much harder on the defensive part of the game, and this will help our team to get easier buckets on the offensive end. We just have to stay focused this year an both sides of the court" When looking at his team, Coach Paulsen didn't have much to say. He doesn't have anything to compare this team with. Paulsen's main goal is to have Behrend playing in March, which would mean the Lions would be in a tournament somewhere. When looking at the progress of the Lions in practice, Paulsen said, "I'm pleased, but I'm not satisfied." • • • The Collegian The upset The Lions beat Slippery Rock in OT, but finish the seaons with two shut out losses on the road rl..Toi;ml The Collegian Spurred on by a pair of dramatic goals from Yasser Daoudi, the Behrend Soccer squad triumphed over Slippery Rock 3- 2 last Wednesday in the team's final home game of the season. The win, however, was followed by two bitter losses later in the week as the Lions ended their 1990 campaign. In Wednesday's match, Behrend started off strong as Junior midfielder Erik Filoon scored nine minutes into the game on a placekick following a hand ball call. The Rockets tied the game on a direct kick from about 25 yards out with just under 17 minutes to go before the half. That set the stage for a wild, emotional second half of action. Midway through the period, b - ack Tony Perdue came up big for the Lions, saving a shot on an empty Behrend net. Goaltender Les Spear had just made two saves and was caught out of position on the play. With about three and half minutes to go in regulation, Lions back Jeff Hockenberger was issued a red card after he tackled a Slippery Rock player. This meant that Behrend would have to play the remainder of the game shorthanded, 10 on 11. Behrend almost folded from the lack of another body on the field moments later when Spear was caught out of his net once more after having made a save. But reserve back Benjamin Appiah saved the day, sweeping a Rocket shot out of an empty crease. The two clubs went into overtime, but the Rockets came up big right away, netting a breakaway score just 29 seconds into the first extra session. Following a shot by forward Mike Dalzall that hit the goalpost with 7:50 to go, Daoudi picked up his first goal aiming a header just inside the left post to tie the score at two apiece. The teams ventured into a second overtime, where Daoudi took matters into his own hands once again, picking up a loose ball that had been mishandled by Slippery Rock's goalie. Daoudi's shot found the back of the net uncontested. Coming with ten and a half minutes to go, enough time was left for the Rock to even the score, but Behrend clamped down to take the victory. "We put ourselves in a difficult situation," said Head Coach Herb Lauffer after the game. "A lot of times, teams are down a man and have won. What made our task even more difficult was that we became a goal down soon after that. To our credit, we got the goals we needed to get to get the win. To do it against a division two team was noteworthy as well." The last two matches of the year were disappointing in comparison to the Slippery Rock game. On Saturday, the Lions fell to Houghton 4-0, and then traveled to lUP, taking one on the chin, 1-0. The former game was virtually over before it started as Houghton scored less then ten minutes into the contest, just enough for the victory. A pair of scores late in the first half, just 37 seconds apart put the Lions away for good. "We made a couple of mistakes to let Houghton's goals in," said Lauffer afterward. "On the third goal, we had our offside trap set, the ball got behind the defense, and our goalie (Spear) cleared it out. "We also played a man down for a substantial amount of time in the second half, but there's a big difference between when you're down by one and down by three (goals). That pressured us more and cut down our effectiveness." The lUP match was a closer result. A goal by Indiana with 27 minutes gone in the first half was all that was required for the victory. "They (lUP) didn't pressure us (after the goal)," said Lauffer. "It was a case where we played well, but with a 4-10 record and playing the last game of the season, pride has to see us through. I'm not saying we don't have any pride, but there was no desire present to make a difference. lUP was in no better mood. They seemed to be content with just one goal." NOTES: Prior to the Houghton match, two Behrend players were suspended from the team due to a run in with the police. One of the players was E. Filoon, an ECAC all-star last year. The other was reserve Bond Reinhardt.... With the season over, final stats are in. Sophomore Ron Peterman won the team scoring race this year, netting five goals and adding three assists to finish with 13 points overall. That total just edged the 12 points put up by both Daoudi and E. Filoon. All of Daoudi's points came on goals, the team leader with six, as E. Filoon's points came by way of three scores and six assists, the team leader in the latter. Alderson-Broaddus 2, Behrend 0 15-9, 15-10 Final Soccer Statistics Scoring Peterman 5 3 13 Daoudi 6 0 12 E.
