Spikers roller coaster ride continues
by Steven R. Smith

The women's volleyball
team has had a season of ups
and downs.
They have at times raised
their level of play to Match
that of superior squads.
They have also at times
fallen to younger teams with
less experience.
Last week was a perfect
example.
The spikers began last
week's schedule with the
long awaited Pitt-Penn State
game (That's Pitt-Bradford
by the way).
This match showed off
the upper level of the
spiker's play. They served
the ball well, dug
consistently, and worked
together to put the Lady
Panthers away 15-8,15-1.
"They were simply an
inexperienced team,"
commented Behrend Coach
Jan Wilson on the Pitt team.
"We played well, and that's
all we needed."
That good play continued
in the next match against
NAIA rival Seton Hill, but to
a different end.
This match pitted the
spikers against the fast,
hard-hitting offense of one
of the top-ranked teams in
the NAIA.
Sewn Hill started the
match like champs with
some tricky ball movement
and a few quick spikes.
The Lady Lions countered
with Erica Scribner (nine
kills) and Lori Connick

(eight kills), who took
advantage of the team effort
being made to get the ball to
the hitters.
The game was a battle of
ups and downs, but the Hill
women prevailed, 16-14.
The second game turned out
to be much like the first with
both teams fighting for every
point.
The Behrend women put
16 balls on the floor, but
dropped the second game in
a 15-10 decision.
"We've set a goal
to win at least
half of our
remainiing
games."
- Jan Wilson
Volleyball Coach
Despite the loss. Wilson
said she was pleased with
her teams' offense.
"Twenty-nine kills is the
most kills we've had in two
games all year. We walked
away from that match not
satisfied, but not
disappointed."
If you believe in signs of
things to come then the fact
that the lady spiker's bus
died after the tri-match in
Bradford should provide you
with some assurance,
because the women's game
stalled also.
The Lady Lions hoped to

which had brought them a
win in Bradford against
Grove City and Westminster
College.
The opposing teams in
these two matches were very
similar.
Grove City and
Westminster have strong
serving teams who can move
the ball well. Unfortunately,
not only was their
opponents' style of play the
same, the outcome was also
the same.
A lack of teamwork and a
missing mental game
brought quick losses in both
matches.
First to Grove City, 15-7,
15-7, and then to
Westminster, 15-5,15-12.
The losses dropped the
spikees record to 12-19 with
13 matches remaining.
"We've set a goal to win
at least half of our remaining
games," says Wilson. "But
it's hard to predict when
you're up one match and
down the next."

will finally have their first

Tuesday. The tri-match
involves local rivals
Mercyhurst College and
Lake Erie. Starting time for
the match is 6 p.m.
