Page 12 Lady netters finish season with Cardinal Invitational Tournament b Robert Kitchen The Collegian The women's tennis team ended their season by finishing fourth in the Card.nal Invitational Tournament at St. John Fisher College. The tournament was held on October Sth and ran through October 6th. Four teams competed in the tourney other than Behrend, including St. John Fisher, Ithaca, Nazareth, and Wells. Behrend placed fourth out of the five teams with a score of 10.5 points. Representing Behrend in singles were Nicole Anderson, Melissa Clark, Steffani Rasche, and Karen Major. Anderson won her first singles match, over Laura Pearon of Nazareth, 6-2, 6-4. She lost her second match, 6-4, 6-2, to Sacha Down, also of Nazareth, to end her tournament play. Clark won her first singles match 6-3, 7-6, over Michelle Vournard of St. John Fisher. Clark also lost in her second outing (6-1, 6-1) to Ithaca's Kenja Ackerman. Rasche then lost, 6-2, 6-2, in her next match. Major lost her first and only singles match, 6-1, 6-1, falling to Nazareth's Julie Emmich. "We have definitely laid a foundation for the future." - Dan Gallegos Tennis Coach In doubles, the team of Anderson-Rasche won 6-3, 6-0 in the first round, toppling the tandem of McFadden-Fitch of SL John Fisher. They then lost their second match, to Ithaca's pairing of Ackerman-Paul 7-5, 6-4. The team of Clark-Major dropped their first round match, 6-2, 6-1. This was Behreaufs fourth year competing in the tournament. The Lady Lions earned more points in this year's tourney than in their previous three visits. "It was a nice way to end the season." Despite the team's Coral record of 2-8, Gallegos says he is confident about the future of women's tennis at Behrend. "We have definitely laid a foundation for the future," said Gallegos. "I've never seen people work so hard. Coaching the women was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed coaching them." The team is looking to have four players back for next year. They include Anderson, Major, Kathy Nicholls, and Jennifer Scribner.
