Former Secretary of Defense
Frank Carlucci will speak at
Penn State-Behrend Saturday,
Oct. 13, at 8 p.m. in Erie Hall.
The presentation highlights the
college's Parents and Families
weekend, which provides a wide
variety of academic and social
programming designed to
introduce the families of students
to the traditions of Penn State-
Behrend.
Carlucci, the National
Security Advisor under the
Reagan administration, will
address the topic of "Peace in the
East: Security in the West." His
extensive knowledge of the
subject stems from experience
under four presidential
administrations, including
positions of Deputy Director of
Central Intelligence, Deputy
Director of the Office of
Management and Budget, and
Ambassador to Portugal.
"Given his knowledgeable
expertise in the Defense
department and the current
situation in the Middle East, this
will be one of the most
interesting and timely lectures in
this year's Speaker Series," said
David Shields, assistant dean of
student services.

"It's an opportunity for all
Greeks to get together to have
fun."
That was the opinion of
Alpha Sigma Tau's president Lisa
Krahe after the last event in
Behrend's Greek Week.
The week-long celebration is
traditionally held during the first
week in October and includes
competitions, social events and
service projects aimed at helping
the campus.
"It was a good time had by
all, especially events such as
dizzy bats and the obstacle course
race," said Eric Haus, president of
Delta Chi fraternity.
Each night of the week held a
different event.
The opening ceremonies on
Sunday night, highlighted by the
lighting of the torch, were held in
Erie Hall and followed by the
chariot races. Judging of the
chariots were held prior to the
races with Sigma Tau Gamma
and Alpha Sigma Tau winning
top honors for their designs.
On the next night the
fraternities and sororities showed
their strength and coordination
during the tug of war event and
the tricycle race. Sigma Tau

Carlucci's presentation
culminates, the college's annual
Parents and Families weekend,
which begins Friday, Oct. 12,
and continues through Sunday,
Oct. 14.
"This weekend provides an
opportunity for families to really
see what the campus is like,"
explains Shields.
"Although many parents
visited the school when the
semester began, most were too
busy helping their children
unpack to appreciate the
campus," Shields continued.

Behrend tries to

The Community Blood Bank
of Erie County will be holding a
blood drive in the Reed Building
on October 17 and 18.
The event, which is being
sponsored by Tau Kappa Epsilon
and Sigma Theta Chi, has taken
place at Behrend for the past six
years.
"The blood bank relies on
Behrend in the fall and they really
need the blood right now. The
blood stays here in Erie and
benefits us," said Patty
McMahon, nurse practitioner at
Behan].
"We've won the Lifeline Cup
for the last two years," said
James Esplen, president of Tau
Kappa Epsilon. The Lifeline Cup
is a trophy awarded to the area
college that donates the most
blood.
McMahon said the other
colleges involved in the
competition (Gannon Univercity,
Mercyhurst College, Edinboro
University and Villa Maria
College) want to take the trophy
away from Behrend. "The
competition will be really stiff.
Their blood drives will be after
ours," she said. The winner will
be announced next spring.
