Page 8 World Party celebrates music of the 60's by Gary L. Nolan The Collegian Due to the great fascination of late with the era of the sixties, many artists have tried their hand at recreating that period's music. Unfortunately, most have turned to either retreads of the style, or covers that do not match the emotion of the original. It is only with an adept musical ear that the favorable sound can be channeled and improved through the eyes of the nineties. World Party's recent album, Goodbye Jumbo, clearly masters this art. Images of The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan immediately come to mind as frontman Karl Wallinger borrows from his sixties mentors. Wallinger, former member of the Irish band The Waterboys, uses the name World Party as a pseudonym for his one man In Wallinger's hands , the sixties and the nineties seem meant for each other . show. He writes, records and produces the work himself, thugh at the same time leaving the studio door open for guests. Fellow countrywoman Sinead O'Connor lends backing vocals in this release. Goodbye Jumbo, the second album by World Party, shows musical growth since the first release Private Revolution. However critically acclaimed, Wallinger's past works have not received the commercial success deserving of an artist of his stature. At the onset of the album, Wallinger immediately sets the stage for what is to come. The first two tracks "Its Too Late," and the single "Way Down Now," add the fresh air of the nineties to the flavor of the sixties era. The lyrics borrow directly from Bob Dylan, "And all the THE PROVOST GOLF TOURNAMENT WHO: Students, Faculty & Staff WHEN: Saturday, September 29th at 9:OOAM COST: $l2 per person includes: 18 holes of golf Catered cook-out Gifts for every golfer Prizes to winners DEADLINE: Friday. Wallinger later takes a chapter from the Rolling Stones with a familiar background chorus, reminiscent of "Sympathy for the Devil." Wallinger also clearly masters the sixties style guitar. It has a blues influence, yet it keeps the sixties heart; an art that has certainly been lost in the glamour rock world of today. Wallinger meticulously avoids the pitfall of sounding dated by adding a violin to the release. This mellow sound provides a soft, sensitive edge. The edge proves to multiply the meaning of the lyrics, giving them a life all their own. One highlight is the current single "Put the Message in the Box." Its flowing sound was showcased on MTV's Video Music Awards this year, and is a regular on the MTV playlist. Though this release has many artistic moments, it is not without shortcomings. There is some filler material, and times when Wallinger loses touch with his audience. These few moments can be overlooked, however, when compared with the strong material in the rest of the album. The climax of the album is reached in the song "Sweet Soul Dream". Wallinger maximizes the background vocals of Sinead O'Connor with a full sound. The violin roams excellently through the piece, as the lyrics grip the emotions. World Party, through the eyes of Karl Wallinger, has yielded yet another strong release. Hand in hand the sixties and the nineties seem meant for each other in Wallinger's able hands. A talent in any era, Wallinger and World Party show inspiration through imitation.
