Inconsistencies stop spikers
Lady Lions drop ' home ' tri-match with Thiel , John Carroll
Steven R. Smith
The Collegian
The women's volleyball team
missed injured starter Lori
Connick in their first home
match last Thursday.
The match pitted the Lady
Lions against John Carroll and
Thiel College in the spiker's
'home' debut at the Iroquois High
School gym. The tri-match was
played at the local high school
due to problems with the floor
renovations at Erie Hall.
Despite a solid effort, the
spikers dropped both matches to
lower their record to 3-10.
"It wasn't so much our
opponents that beat us, it was
our own inexperience," said
Coach Jan Wilson.
That inexperience was
heightened by the loss of
freshman starter Lori Connick,
who had been playing well until
a torn calf muscle took her out of
the line-up last week.
"With Lori out we had to
move some people around, it put
some of the women in new
starting positions and brought
out some inconsistencies in our
play," said Wilson.
Buffalo sends netters

Gallegos still positive about team

The number two doubles
team, consisting of Katherine
Rozumny and Karen Major, did
not play due to rain.
Katherine Rozumny gave
forth a valiant effort in singles
play. She went three sets but lost
the match in a tough battle. The
scores for her match were 6-7,7-

Melissa Clark, the number

The Lady Lions opened the
night with a match against an
always strong John Carroll squad.
The J.C. women immediately
lived up to their billing by going
out to a 6-0 lead on the arm of
six top-spin service winners.
"Some of the freshmen aren't
used to that kind of a serve and
weren't moving up to take it.
"We have to learn to
tough it out and take
our lumps. We have
a good team here ,
so we just have to
keep a good attitude
and gain some
consistency."
-Jan Wilson
Volleyball Coach
They had some trouble adjusting
and we got behind,” said senior
Erica Scribner.
The Lady Lions lost the first
game, but they adjusted to the
top-spin serve. They went on to
from play. This caused the line
up to shift upwards thus hurting
Behrend's chances of winning.
Behrend's record is 1-5 while
Buffalo State is 3-1. Despite the
team's record, Gallegos is still in
high spirits. Gallegos said, "I'm
pleased with the players, they're
working hard." Gallegos also
says the players on the team still
show a positive attitude.
Gallegos has two goals for the
team and feels he is reaching
them. His goals are to have fun
and to lay a foundation for the
future.
The lady netters end a four
game road trip with a home
match against Allegheny
College. Allegheny is a Division
111 team like Behrend. Allegheny
is a Division 111 powerhouse, and
when asked about the match,
Gallegos said, "I like to play
tough teams in our division."
Game time is 2 pm.
The Collegian
win the second game with some
good serving and quick kills.
Unfortunately, an error
plagued third game allowed John
Carroll to hand the ladies their
first home loss. The final game
scores were 7-15, 15-10, and 12-
15.
Thiel College was the spiker's
next opponent. The match could
have gone either way, but the
Lady Lions had problems
maintaining their intensity after
the close loss to John Carroll.
"We just didn't play intense
enough," said Wilson. "Thiel
wasn't any better than us, we just
didn't play like we do in
practice."
Thiel went on to win the
match (15-8, 15-12) and gained
their first win of the '9O season.
"We have to learn to tough it
out and take our lumps. We have
a good team here, so we just have
to keep a good attitude and gain
some consistency," said Wilson.
NOTES: The ladies will try
to improve their record tonight as
they travel to SUNY-
Fredonia....Connick will not play
tonight, but could possibly return
for the tournament this weekend
at Alfred State.
