Police and Safety has a new director
Silvis brings experience to the department
by Collene Kelleher
Collesian Staff Writer
Larry Silvis, the new director
of Police and Safety, arrived on
campus two weeks ago to begin
work. Silvis has several goals in
mind for the Behrend campus.
First, he "wishes to continue
the professionalization of the
department, while evaluating and
updating it's mission."
Silvis said that he is
"impressed with the
professionalism and overall
ability of Police and Safety's
present staff members." He
wishes to combine his talent
with that ability, to give Police
and Safety an even more vital
role in Behrend's social
community.
He added that he is impressed
with the quality of the students
he has met here at Behrend, and
that he is concerned not only
about on-campus students, but
also Behrend's commuters.
Silvis emphasized the
important role the Student
Hoffman returns to University Park
(continued from page 1)
to the "hub-bub, action, and daily
problems of a large campus like
University Park."
As Police and Safety Manager
at Behrend, Hoffman's duties
included law enforcement,
environmental health and safety,
parking, key control, and
property inventory.
Hoffman also prides himself
on developing the Student Escort
Service and Student Auxiliary.
However, "opening the lines of
communication between students
and police," Hoffman says is
what he is most proud of at
Behrend.
Beginning September 17th,
Hoffman will be a police service
officer at University Park. In
addition to his duties there, he
plans to attend graduate school to
obtain a masters degree in
Disorderly Conduct
A fight was reported at the
Reed Union parking lot on
September 7. Upon arrival of
Police and Safety, no one was
fighting and the people standing
around the scene were asked to
leave because they were non
students.
Harassment
Police and Safety received a
report from a student that
someone had called him on the
phone to harass him and came
banging on his door. Upon
arrival of Police and Safety to the
student's residence, no one could
be found in the area.
Auxiliary plays at Behrend. He
hopes for the expansion of the
auxiliary, whose functions
include giving parking tickets,
providing escorts, and assisting
the officers patrolling.
"I am impressed
with the
professionalism and
overall ability of
Police and Safety's
present staff
members
- Larry Silvis
Police and Safety
Manager
Prior to arriving at Behrend,
Silvis was systems security agent
for Allegheny Power Systems,
also in Meadville. Before that,
Silvis served as director of Police
and Safety for eight years at
Allegheny College in North

More Disorderly
Conduct
On Sept. 8, Police & Safety
received two phone calls
concerning a fight inside the Reed
Building. Upon investigation, a
group of 5 males were found
yelling and screaming at everyone
inside the Wintergreen Cafe.
Several people in the Cafe were
yelling to have these 5 males
arrested. Police & Safety warned
the 5 males if they did not leave
the Cafe they would to subject to
arrest. At this time they
reluctantly left.
Larry Silvis
Meadville and also was a
Pennsylvania State Trooper for
eleven years before entering the
college police field.
He looks forward to the
coming school year, having
found the exact type of director's
position he wanted, " a small,
rural school with the potential for
growth."
administrative justice. He also
hopes to specialize as an evidence
technician and forensic specialist
after completing sixteen hours of
fingerprint training.
Hoffman says what he will
miss most about Behrend is the
people. His advice to Behrend
students and faculty is "Don't be
afraid to talk to the police to help
solve your problems." Hoffman's
theory about Police and Safety is
that "We {Police and Safety) live
in a glass house. Everyone sees
in," and Police and Safety are
always available to help students
when they need them.
Hoffman's replacement is
Larry Silvis, a former state police
officer of Allegheny College.
Silvis has already started his job
in -preparation for Hoffman's
departure on the 14th of
September.
