Men’s baseball
Edinboro takes the fight out
of Lions in twinbill sweep
by Tony Viola
Collegian Staff Writer
The men's baseball team
played only one double-header in
the past week since games
against Allegheny College and
John Carroll University were
postponed.
"The layoff over Easter hurt
our pitchers, and these were the
only two games of the season
where we got knocked around,"
commented Head Coach Mike
Bari on Monday's twinbill
against Edinboro University.
The Lions lost the first game
by a score of 13-0, and the second
game 12-5.
In the opener, there weren't
too many bright spots for
Behrend.
As a team, the Lions only had
two hits, both by centerflelder
Chris Myers. Myers batted two
for three, including a double in
the first inning.
The Fighting Scots exploded
in the fifth inning, scoring five
runs.
Behrend starting pitcher Darin
Wotus lasted three and a third
innings and gave up eight runs,
but only three of the runs were
earned. Wotus allowed eight hits,
while walking two batters and
striking out one hitter.
Reliever Bill Weimer pitched
two-thirds of an inning giving up
two runs on two bases on balls.
Weimer didn't allow any hits in
his short appearance. Paul Benim
was the next reliever for the
Lions. Benim pitched two and
two-thirds innings, giving up
three runs on three hits. He
walked four Edinboro hitters.
Don Alpem finished the game
for Behrend throwing the last out
for the Lions. Alpem struckout
the one batter he faced.
In the second game, Scott
Fleshman started for the Lions,
but he didn't even last one
inning. The Fighting Scots

The Behrend men's tennis
team suffered another defeat, this
time to Allegheny on Saturday.
The Lions are now 1-5.
On Tuesday, April 10th,
Behrend was set to play Geneva,
when rain prevented the start of
the match. Last year, against
Geneva, the Lions played at
home and won the match 8-1.
Unfortunately, due to the rain
cancellation, the Geneva match
will not be able to be made up.
Geneva has ended their regular
tennis season and is presently
involved in tournament play.
On Thursday, Behrend was
rained out again. The Lions were
to play Indiana University (PA)
Get back: First baseman Ray Cerqua awaits
the throw as a Lions pitcher chases back an
Edinboro runner
scored five runs against him in
the top of the first inning.
Fleshman was hit four times and
walked one batter.
Freshman Scott Frantz pitched
the rest of the game. Frantz let
seven runs score, five of which
were earned runs. He had no
walks and struckout five
sluggers.
Offensively, Behrend showed
some splendid hitting at times.
Ray Cerqua hit two of three,
continuing to bat well for the
Lions. Cerqua also scored a run
after he hit a triple in the sixth
inning.
Wotus hit a double to drive in
Cerqua, and he also scored in the
sixth inning. Benim drove in
Wotus for the fourth run for
Behrend, second of the inning.
Benim hit two of three for the
at home. Last year, Behrend was
defeated by a 9-0 score. This
match will tentatively be made
up on April 23rd, with the time
for the match to be announced
later.
The Lions finally got to play
on Saturday. Although they were
defeated by Allegheny, 6-3,
Coach Mike Grignol said that all
the players performed well.
Number one seed. Bill
Schmitt, a sophomore
Engineering major, defeated Doug
Rochner, (6-4,6-3). The number
two seed, Chuck Keenan, was
defeated by Allegheny's Matt
Michalski.

and a graduate of North Hills
High School, has had an

game, driving in two runs.
Jim Goard cranked a home run
and a double, scoring two runs.
He also had one run batted in.
Matt Palisin pinched hit a single
and had a RBI, driving in Goard
in the seventh inning.
As a team, Behrend had five
extra base hits out of their nine
hits for the game.
The Lion's schedule is very
busy for the next week. Today,
Behrend plays Allegheny College
at home. The Lions travel to
Gannon University to play a
double-header tomorrow. The
Lions then come back home to
play Case Western on Saturday.
On Sunday, Behrend plays John
Carroll University in a twinbill
at home.
has said that he has been the
most improved player on the
team this year. Grignol has high
hopes for Keenan if he continues
to improve at his present rate.
According to Coach Grignol,
Keenan is "stroking out
extremely well and is playing
serve and volleys.” This is
typical of the Pittsburgh native.
Chuck Keenan is expected to
continue in his high performance
trend and, as Coach Grignol
states, he is definitely "standing
out."
Coming up, the Lions will
play Edinboro on Tuesday, and
Thiel on April 19. Both games
will be held at home, weather
permitting.
