Page 8 Baseball squad nails four-hit shutout victory by Tony Viola Collegian Staff Writer The Men's Baseball team was rained out of two doubleheaders this past weekend, which wasn't a surprise to anyone since the weather was gloomy. Bchrend traveled to Cleveland to play John Carroll University before finding out that their game would be postponed last Saturday. The games will be made up April 13 at home starting at 1 pm. The Lion's home doubleheader scheduled against Allegheny College on Sunday was also postponed due to poor weather conditions. The home twinbill with the Gators has been rescheduled for April 12 at at 3 pm. The only games the Lions played this past week was the two-game set against Washington & Jefferson College last Wednesday. In the opening game, Darin Wotus pitched a shutout for the Lions to pick up his first win of the year by a score of 1-0. Wotus Softball nine splits home doubleheader with W & J by Robert Kitchen Collegian Staff Writer The women's softball team split a doubleheader in their season opener against Washington and Jefferson on March 28. In game one, the Lady Lions suffered a 4-3 loss. Washington and Jefferson scored in their final at bat to steal the win. Wotus also struckout two hitters. Offensively, Behrend had seven hits, including three doubles. Scott Fleshman hit two for two and scored the winning run after drawing a walk in the third inning. Ray Cerqua cracked two hits, one a double in the third inning which knocked in the game winning score. The Lions had eight baserunners left on base and committed no errors during the entire game, which has been a problem lately. The Presidents took it to the Lions in the second game by winning convincingly, 14-5. Eight runs were scored for Washington & Jefferson in the second inning, while taking an early 11-1 lead after two innings. Behrend scored four runs in the bottom of he third inning to make it an 11-3 ball game, but it would never get closer. Cerqua took the loss, his second as a starter. Cerqua lasted for only one inning and was committing four miscues. Senior Erika Renwick pitched a three-hitter and gave up only one earned run for Behrend. She yielded only one walk and whiffed five batters. At the plate Erica Scribner, Melanie Dunn, and Michelle Hoover each collected two hits. In game two, Behrend canned a 12-8 victory. Hoover pitched a complete game in her first collegiate start, also nabbing her first collegiate win. Weimer didn't walk anyone while picking up one strikeout. Matt Palisin pitched the last four innings for Behrend. Palisin 9th let only one hit go against him, and he didn't give up any runs. Palisin walked one batter and struckout three sluggers. Shawn Krepps rapped a hit while scoring two runs and picking up a run batted in. The Lions stranded seven batters. « /
