Behrend briefs
Women as Leaders Program is a two week
seminar held in Washington D.C. for undergraduate
women. Any one interested there is a brochure
posted in The Collegian office.
Faculty Appreciation Day will be held
April 18,1990 by the Lion Ambassadors. There will
be a Jeopardy-style game show at 6 pm in Reed 117
along with the announcement of the survey winners.
Students Today for Tomorrow's Earth, a new
environment concerns group is having the first
meeting, in Reed 117 at 4 pm on Tuesday, April 10
to organized work on Earth Day (April 22).
TKE and Delta Chi fraternities are sponsoring
an organ donor drive outside Reed 117 on Tuesday
and Wednesday, April 10 and 11.
Students United for Success (SUFS) will
hold a meeting in the Reed Conference Room at 4 pm
on Wednesday, April 10. For more information
contact Leslie Daniel at 6660 or Biddy Brooks at
6164.
The Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship at
Behrend is sponsoring the Compassion Project to
inform students of world hunger on Friday and
Saturday, April 6 and 7. Contact Don Dagen at 0966
or Steve Smith at 6974.
A clothes drive for the Seventh Day Adventis
Church is being sponsored by Sigma Theta Chi in
the Winter Garden of the Reed Union Building from
April 16-18 from 10 am to 4 pm.
The Vet's Club is sponsoring an Easter Egg
Hunt on April 14 and need donations of stuffed
animals for prizes. Donations may be dropped off in
the Office of Student Services.
A memorial walk in commemoration of the
anniversary of the slaying of Rev. Martin Luther
King, Jr. will be held today at 4:30 pm from the
Martin Luther King Center proceeding to Peny
Square. The Blue Bus will depart from Reed Parking
lot at 4 pm.
Creative Brainstorming will be presented
by student leader, Lynn Case of Joint Residence
Council in Reed 116 at spm on Tuesday, April 10.
Coffee with the Provost will be held in the
Reed Seminar Room at 10:30 am on Wednesday,
April 11.
The Effects of Drugs will be presented in the
Niagara Lobby at 7 pm on Wednesday, April 11 by
Residence Life, Sigma Tau Gamma and Police and
Safety.
Organization of Latin American Students
will be having a meeting in Niagara Lobby at 9:30
pm on Monday, April 9.
A Cultural Fiesta, a celebration of cultures
with dance, food and customs, will be held in the
Winter Garden at 7 pm on Wednesday, April 11.
The Top of the Hill is sponsoring a food
drive to benefit Emmaus Soup Kitchen. Please place
non-perishable food items in the donation box in the
Winter Garden.
Police Report:
Two students referred for
practical joke in dorm

Two male resident students
were referred to the Student
Disciplinary Board and face
possible disciplinary action for
their part in an attempted
practical joke.
The action was taken after
police investigated a reported dead
animal in Lawrence Hall early
Friday morning. Officers
discovered that a dead rabbit - the
apparent victim of a traffic
mishap - had been transported by
a student to Lawrence Hall.
According to Hoffman, the
remains were then placed near the
doors of two rooms as a practical
joke.
Alcohol Charges Filed
Charges for possession of an
alcoholic beverage by a minor
were filled against a resident
student early Friday morning.
Hoffman stated that the student
was cited after she was observed
Sigma Kappa Nu aids environmental
group in pH testing

The Sigma Kappa Nu
fraternity has begun monitoring
the pH levels of Four Mile Creek
as part of its effort to educate
members and the community of
the harmful effects of acid rain.
Sigma Kappa Nu along with
their advisor, Dr. Don Leavers,
will be collecting samples from
the creek every Thursday for the
next year.
These samples then will be
sent to the Alliance for Acid Rain
Monitoring (ALLARM)
ROTC cadets
tour Aberdeen
Proving Ground
On March 23 through March
25, members of Behrend ROTC
visited the Aberdeen Proving
Grounds in Maryland.
The trip was an orientation
trip to familiarize the students
with the operation and some of
the social life found on an active
Army post. While there the
students were given tours of the
ordinance works where they
climbed inside the M-l Abrams
tank.
At the recovery area, the
students were given a
demonstration on how to remove
tanks and other large vehicles
from the mud.
Next, the students were taken
to an Army confidence course
designed to test a persons stamina
to the limit. The competition

Traffic Incidents
Police are continuing to
investigate a traffic incident
reported by a commuter student
on Friday. Hoffman staled that
the student and her three-year-old
son were walking north on the
sidewalk on the east side of Eric
Hall shortly after 1 pm when her
son was almost struck by a
vehicle. The driver of the vehicle
was apparently using the
sidewalk to travel from the
commuter lot roadway to the
Reed Lot.
A vehicle was apparently
struck in the left rear wheel flare
while it was parked in the
maintenance lot on Saturday.
Hoffman reported that the owner
of the vehicle was not a Behrend
student and that the investigation
is continuing.
A resident student reported
headquarters in Dickinson, PA.
Recent studies have shown
Pennsylvania receives the most
acid rain of any state in the
nation.
ALLARM's goal is to
document the effects of acid rain
by monitoring the acidity of
streams and to educate the public
on the problem of acid rain.

contributing to this effort
through their monitoring of Four
Mile Creek and educating its
brothers and the campus
community on the effects of acid
rain.

over, the students returned to the
barracks where they changed into
dry clothes and were treated to a
social at the post Officers Club.
The social included dancing and
socializing with some of the post
officers to give the students an
idea of what Army life as an
officer is like.
Before leaving the next day,
the students went to the Army
Ordnance Museum where a
comprehensive history of the
Ordnance Corps is maintained.

artillery pieces, and weapons used
from the Indian Wars through to
Vietnam.

Tennis Net Stolen
A tennis net, valued at $155,
was reported stolen from Court
#6 by the Athletic Department
last week. Anyone with
information about the theft,
which occurred between 5:30 pm,
March 26, and 8 am , March 27,
is asked to contact the
Department of Police and Safety
at 898-6101.
Drug Program Presented
Hoffman reported that Officer
Tod Allen presented a drug
awareness and prevention
program to the local Boy Scout
troop. About 26 people attended
the program.
Greg Garrison, who first
introduced this program to his
fraternity, was made aware of the
ALLARM program by his sister,
who was helping to get
volunteers to monitor streams all
over Pennsylvania.
"Sigma Kappa Nu is always
glad to get involved with things
concerning the community," said
Garrison.
