Volume XXXVIII, No. 2 University examines day care Behrend ranks third neediest of the 22 campuses by Jennifer Flanagan Collegian Staff Writer Penn State University, in response to recommendations suggested in a comprehensive report conducted by the Penn State Women's Commission, has established a child care task force to address the child care issue at every Penn State campus. According to Chris Reber, dean of student services, "Prior to this report and study, the University's policy was really...'we'U assist the community in any way we can, but we will not get involved in providing direct services.' The task force recommended a new poticy...which says 'no longer can we take that approach, we need to be directly involved in facilitating familial relationships'....” In addition to the University task force, Behrend College has established a task force as well to address problems specifically in the Behrend community. Carolyn Spies, professor of psychology, said, "There is definitely a need for child care among students, faculty and staff." In fact the needs assessment report compiled by the UP task force has found Behrend campus to be number three out of 22 campuses in order of relative need for child care. Pictures for the Provost Spies is working on the "Pictures for the Provost" campaign which was initiated in order to "personalize the issue through stories and pictures which will perhaps have a more persuasive effect since the statistics we've gathered haven't been to persuasive."
