The Collegian Wednesday, March 28,1990 Baseball squad breaks into win column on the road by Tony Viola Collegian Staff Writer Bchrend played two doublchcadcrs agaiu.M Thiel College in the pact week and won their first decision of the young season on the road. On Monday, the Lions hosted a doublchcadcr against Thiel College in the bitter cold. Thiel defeated Bchrend in the first game 5-2, and the Lions dropped the late game by a margin of 6-4. Freshman Scott Frantz started for Bchrend in the first game, pitching 51/3 innings, striking out two batters and walking three. Bill Weirner pitched the rest of the game for the Lions in relief. Weirner walked one batter, and didn't have any strike outs. Freshman Weirner, commenting on the bitter weather, said, "It's hard to keep loose and keep your arm ready to pitch." Scott Flcshman started the second game for Bchrend and gave up five runs. Frantz came in for Flcshman to end the game. The Lions split the twinbill, winning the second game by a score of 6-2 after losing a heartbreaking opener, 2-1. In the first game, Thiel scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Captain Darin Wotus pitched a complete game for Bchrend. Wotus struck out seven Thiel batters, but also walked seven hitters. Wotus gave up just one earned run in the contest. The Lions scored first when Paul Benim crossed home plate in the first inning to give Bchrend a 1-0 lead. The lead didn't last long as Thiel scored to tic the game in the bottom of the first inning. Captain Ray Cerqua led the Lions in hitting going two for three in die first game. The Lions won the second game against Thiel, 6-2, for their first win of the year. Flcshman pitched a two hitter, picking up a complete game for the victory. Flcshman recorded five strikeouts and yielded four free Today Saturday Sunday Monday Hiram Tuesday passes Offensively, John Terrill went two for three and scored two runs for the Lions. Terrill also had one run batted in. Cerqua also scored two runs in the game. Sophomore Tim Cook had two RBl's while collecting two hits in four chances. Sophomore Kirk McKinney was one for three and drew one walk while batting lead-off for Bchrend. Carl Brown and Tony Reed scored the two runs for Thiel. "We played really well in the second game, displaying a good work ethic," explained Head Coach Mike Bari. Bari also added, "The players look at it as a 1-1 record rather than a 1-5 start." Terrill is hitting .400 to lead the Lions on the campaign. The doublchcadcr against Mount Union, Ohio was postponed due to the bad weather conditions on Saturday. The games will be made up later on in the season. The Lions play home today at 1 pm against Washington and Jefferson. After Monday's play, the Lions arc now 1 -7. And tolerance is a polite word f' | Sports 1 Netters serve new season with home match by Sue Cepicka Collegian Staff Writer Last year, the Behrcnd men s tennis team finished with a 6-X record. This year, they hope to improve this accomplishment with the addition of some new talent and the return of their number one and number two seeds. Mike Grignol is entering his third season as coach of the team and is very confident on another successful year. Although he has only three returning players with match experience, he is very positive that his new players will develop and contribute to the team. When asked what the most important factor in the winning of a match was, Coach Grignol quickly replied, "No doubt about it, mental altitudes. A confident altitude helps you to keep r _ yourself in the game". For hi> more experienced players, tim attitude is not a problem, but the younger players must develop it. The number one player on the team is Eric-born sophomore Bill Schmitt. Schmitt had a tremendous first season at Behrend. As a freshman, Schmitt stepped right into die number one position on the team. His record was 9-0 against Division HI opponents, only losing 2 sets in all of the matches. Schmitt is the team leader, with all the confidence and experience that an older player should have. Fellow Sophomore Chuck Keenan holds the number two rank in men's singles. Chuck graduated from North Hills High School in the Pittsburgh area, and he brings with him extensive match experience.
