Behrend briefs
Yearbook Committee Meeting will be
held in the Student Government Association Office at
7 pm on Thursday, February 22. If anyone is
interested, please attend or call the SGA office.
"Why Believe Anything At AH?" will
be the topic of a discussion led by Dr. James Sire,
author and editor of Inter Varsity Press. During the
discussion, which will be held at on Thursday,
March 8 at 8 pm in the Winter Garden, Sire will
encourage students to examine Christianity's claims.
Alpha Sigma Lambda is holding a meeting in
the Reed Conference Room at 5:30 pm on Thursday,
February 22.
The Student Government Association
Budget Committee will be accepting budget requests
for the 1990-91 school year until March 16,1990. For
more information contact David Mahoney at 6452 or
stop by the SGA office.
A weekend trip to Toronto, Canada is
being sponsored by the Behrend College Honors
Program. The $66 cost includes bus transportation,
lodging and admission to the Ontario Science Center,
and is open to all faculty, staff and students.
Saturday afternoon and evening are free for
sightseeing. Reservations will be taken on a first
come, first-served basis until February 26. For more
information, call the Provost's Office at 6160.
Diehl Elementary School is looking for
student volunteers who would like to help teach
Diehl students how to use software programs and to
work with a computer. Students will work one-on
one with Diehl children. If you are interested contact
Mari Trenkle at 6160 or stop by the Glennhill
Farmhouse to sign up.
Mocktail Hour at Dobbins will be held
from 4 to 6:30 on Monday, March 5. This event is
in recognition of National Collegiate Drug
Awareness Week. They will be featuring popcorn,
BBQ wings, cocktail meatballs, potato skins and
toppings, vegetables and dips, breaded mozzarella
sticks, nachos and cheese and a sundae bar.
Students who park in the Reed lot
without a permit: Police and Safety is advising that
there will be additional surveillance efforts Monday
through Friday from 8 to 5 due to complaints by
staff. This lot is reserved for staff and visitors only.
If you have any questions, call Police and Safety.
"Preventing Burnout" will be presented as
the first Emerging Leaders Series lectures. It will be
presented by Ms. Charlene Shoemaker and Mr. Luis
Mongil in the Reed Seminar Room at 5 pm on
Thursday, February 22.
"Mock Interviewing - A Trial Run,"
will be presented by the Career and Placement Office
in the Reed Conference Room at 4 pm on Thursday,
February 22.

trying to break into vehicles
Campus police respond to commuter accidents

A male resident student was
charged by the Penn State-
Behrend's Department of Police
and Safety with attempted theft.
According to Randy Hoffman,
Manager of Police and Safety, a
student auxiliary member of the
Department of Police and Safety
observed a suspect attempting to
enter several vehicles in the Perry
Hall gravel lot on Thursday,
February IS at approximately 1:30
am.
The student auxiliary member
maintained surveillance until
officers arrived and apprehended
the suspect.
Hoffman said he believes this
represents the first time an
auxiliary member has
contributed to an arrest and that
the SA followed established
procedures.
Two commuter students
suffered minor injuries Friday
morning, February 16, when the
vehicle in which they were
traveling left the road at the
intersection of Station and
Saltsman Roads and overturned
into a drainage ditch. Campus
police responded to the accident
and maintained the scene until

Biology major to present abstract in Italy

doing research at the State
University of New York with Dr.
George Stephano, a prominent
person in the field of
ncuroimmunology.
Last summer, Finn went back
Many undergraduate students
at Behrend are actively involved
in research with faculty members.
Research is currently taking
place in all three divisions on
subjects ranging from biology to
physics to political science.
Vicki Kohlmeyer, a
sophomore majoring in political
science, is presently doing
research with Dr. John Gamble,
political science professor.
She is conducting her research
by using microfiche to look at
college catalogs and graduate
school catalogs to find out which
universities and colleges have a
law school program.
This will be worked into a
project funded by a Ford grant
"He just received the grant a
couple of months ago. Before
that I was helping him revise the
political science book that he
wrote," said Kohlmeyer.
She plans to stay at Behrend
for all four years and then
continue on to law school.
Two other Behrend students,
Pat Finn and Louise Steele, are
involved in research in the field
of neuroimmunology.
The research that Steele and
Finn are doing is the first of its
kind to be done anywhere.

arrived. Hoffman said the State
Police arc continuing to
investigate the accident.
Also on Friday morning,
campus police responded to a
vehicle fire on Shannon Road.
Hoffman reported that a
commuter student was driving her
Volkswagen Bug when it ignited.
The car was fully engulfed in
flames when campus police
arrived. Officers remained at the
scene until the fire department
arrived to extinguish the flames
and the Pennsylvania State Police
arrived to investigate.
A male resident student was
injured Sunday while playing
football on the soccer field.
Hoffman reported that the student
complained of severe back pain.
Officers arranged for the student
to be transported by Brookside
Volunteer Fire Department to St.
Vincent Health Center. No
additional information regarding
the current condition of the
student was available.
The Financial Aid Office
reported the theft of the video
tape "Entrance Loan Counseling"
from the Reed conference room
Monday afternoon, February 19.
The tape is valued at $l2.

A fire alarm in the
Hammcrmill/Zurn Building on
Monday evening, February 19
may have been triggered by a
mechanical failure, according to
Hoffman. His department
responded to the alarm and
evacuated the building. He
reported that officers found no
evidence of fire or smoke in the
building and that an investigation
revealed no evidence that the
alarm was intentionally set
Also on Monday, police
investigated an incident of
criminal mischief in room 8 of
the Nick Building. According to
Hoffman, three tables were
damaged and numerous others
were rigged to collapse. Police
arc continuing to investigate.

In an update of last week’s
counterfeiting case, Hoffman
reported that agents of the federal
government's Secret Service have
taken the counterfeit bill as
evidence. Hoffman is unsure what
action the Secret Service plans to
take.
