Page 4 ROTC winter exercises by Quinn Solem For The Collegian Sixteen cadets from Behrcnd's ROTC Ranger Club and 13 cadets from Gannon University's ROTC Raider Club conducted joint winter survival exercises this weekend at Wilderness Lodge on Weeks Road south of 1-90. The cadets, clad in camouflage uniforms and hefting heavy grew backpacks, had the opportunity to practice leadership skills in a cold weather environment during land navigation exercises, patrols, and mock attacks against each other with blank-firing M-16 rifles and M-60 machine guns. The annual winter survival exercise pitted the two college ROTC clubs against each other as opposing forces in the chilly two day event, highlighted with attacks on each other's patrol bases in the rugged, dense forest. "We destroyed them completely," said Cadet Captain Andy McConnell, Commander of the Behrend Ranger Club. At about 8 pm on Saturday the Gannon cadets, confused by two look-outs and a sniper positioned in front of the Behrend defensive patrol base, attacked the wrong target and were quickly defeated in a counter-attack Year round and summer jobe available s3oo*s6oo per week. McConnell, a senior at Behrcnd majoring in political science and history, said that Gannon's reconnaissance patrol, sent out earlier to locate the Behrcnd patrol base, became lost and ran into the look-out and sniper position by mistake at about 4 pm. "The Gannon patrol drew fire from our look-out position, withdrew, and reported back to their patrol base that they had found our base, when in fact they hadn't," McConnell said. Acting on the faulty information, the Gannon Raiders made the 8 pm attack on the look-out position instead of the patrol base, where the majority of the Behrcnd Rangers were assembled. The rangers quickly formed up in a line and moved into position to counter-attack. Firing blanks from their automatic weapons the Behrend cadets charged through the aggressors, overrunning and defeating the Gannon Raiders. Captain James E.
