The visiting Lady Bisons felled the Lady Lions in a close game, 65-63. by Sue Cepicka Collegian Staff Writer Melanie Dunn summed up a disappointing week for the women's hoop squad in one sentence. ”i felt that we did all that we could do, but the ball just wouldn't fall through the hoop," said the starting sophomore forward. Both defeats were by two points. Against Bethany on February 7th, the lady cagers were dropped by a 6S-63 score. Senior record-setter Michele Madison was high-scorer with 17 points. On Saturday night, the Lady Lions took the hosting Lady Golden Tornadoes down to the wire. With a minute and a half remaining in the contest, sophomore forward Michele Bcisler connected on both ends of a one-and-one foul situation to give the lady hoopsters a one point advantage. The teams traded baskets until Geneva regained the lead at the foul line, going on top by two. A last second shot attempt fell short, and the Lady Lions lost their second consecutive two-point game. Leading scorer for Bchrcnd was Dunn with 18 points. The Lady Lions have three games remaining before the close of the 'B9-90 season. Head Coach - Melanie Dunn sophomore forward Jencphcr Banker remarked that she expects to attain three more wins in the final games, if the Lady Lions play to their potential. Banker's troops have compiled eight wins against 14 losses this year, with seven of the losses by five points or less. As the season winds down, Banker will have her eyes on her younger players. She feel that the experience these younger players will get in the next few games will allow them to enter next season with confidence. Men's Basketball Lions drop two more the road, record falls by Tony Viola Collegian Staff Writer Problems continued last week for the men’s cagcrs when they lost two away games at the hands of Geneva College and St. John Fisher College. Last Saturday, the Lions were dominated by Geneva, 86-63. The Golden Tornadoes finished with four scorers in double figures. According to Head Coach Doug Zimmerman, the Lions were overmatched. "Geneva is a better team than wc are," said the seventh-year mentor of ihc men's squad. Geneva led throughout most of the game and owned a 44-24 halftime lead. The loss put Bchrcnd at a disappointing 7-14 marie for the year. Geneva improved its record to 16-7. Bchrcnd scorers were led by senior guard Dave Gurska with 21 points. Gurska shot five for six from behind the three point arc. Shooting guard Jeff Cowan made three out of nine from the three point area to add 11 points for the Lions. Six foot-five forward Rick Demski helped play inside by putting ip 17 points. of Demski r s points were from~* tire free throw line. Freshman center Stcyc Cooper and Demski each had seven rebounds to lead Bchrcnd on the boards. The Golden Tornadoes shot 37 of 69 for 54 percent. Geneva owned the rebounding edge over Bchrcnd by a 39-26 margin. Tim Dilworth led Geneva with 20 points. The Golden Tornadoes' Steve Stokrp scored 12 points in the first half and finished with 18 markers. Todd Dean had 15 points and Tim Bender added 11 buckets for Geneva. On Thursday, Bchrcnd headed into the state of New York to play St. John Fisher. The Cardinals defeated the Lions, 90-83. Zimmerman commented, "St. John Fisher shot outstanding in the first half, but wc still played well." St. John Fisher shot an incredible 61 percent from the floor, with Bchrcnd shooting a respectable 49 percent from the field. The Cardinals canned nine of 16 from three point land while the Lions made only seven of 26 three pointers. The Lions outrcbounded the Cardinals 27-25. Tire Lions were led by Demski in the scoring department with 19 points. Demski also ripped down eight boards to lead Behrend. Junior point guard Randy Baughman made three out of four shots behind the three point arc and added 18 points. Baughman also had nine assists to lead the Lions. Cooper had 14 buckets to aid Bchrcnd. Cowan made Page 11 games on to 7-14 two treys and had 10 points for the Lions. Gurska, Bchrcnd's, all-time three point shooting leader, made only two out of thirteen attempts from behind the arc. Six fool-six senior Kevin Fricdcl led three 20-point Cardinals' scorers with 22 markers. Mark Adams hit five three pointers and ended with 20 points, while Wakili Moore hit two treys to compile 20 points. Kevin Schultz added 13 buckets for St. John Fisher. The Cardinals took a 56- 37 lead into the locker room. The win put St. John Fisher’s record at 10-8. Bchrcnd travels to upstate New York to play Alfred University today. The Lions are hosting Kcuka College this Saturday night at 7:30 for their final home game of the season. Bchrcnd’s closes the season at Kcuka on February 22.
