Police Report: Two false fire alarms reported within past two weeks by Carol Mandera Collegian Staff Writer Lawrence Hall was evacuated by campus police shortly after 1 am Sunday following the second false fire alarm in the building in the last two weeks. Randy Hoffman, Manager of Police and Safety, reported that officers evacuated and inspected the building. No evidence of smoke or fire was discovered. Officers did find evidence of an intentional false alarm, set on the east end of the first floor. Residents were allowed back in the building about 20 minutes after the evacuation. Hoffman said that his department is continuing to investigate and asks that anyone with information contact the Department of Police and Safety at Extension #6lOl. Police are currently investigating two cases involving the theft of property belonging to Behrend students. A VCR valued at approximately $350 was stolen from a campus apartment. Upon investigation, he discovered his VCR had been stolen. Hoffman stated that the student's apartment had been unlocked at the time of the theft. Hubcaps valued at $2OO were stolen Friday from a vehicle parked in the apartment lot. According to Hoffman, the vehicle belonged to a male student residing in one of the campus apartments. Police are seeking information which will lead to the identification of the person or persons who emptied a fire extinguisher inside one of the campus apartments. According to Hoffman, the incident was committed between 8 pm Thursday and 1 am Friday. He stated that the apartment resident admitted to leaving the apartment unlocked and that the student discovered the crime when he returned. The incident was reported to campus police on Saturday, and the investigation continues. Two minor traffic accidents are under investigation. On Tuesday, January 30, a student reported her car was hit while parked in the Reed Lot. Hoffman stated that the accident happened during the evening and that minor damage to the right rear of the car was reported. The second accident was reported on Friday by a commuter student whose car was damaged while parked in lot E. Minor damages were reported. Department of Police and Safety monthly statistics for January 1990 show that the department conducted 23 original criminal investigations, 31 follow-up criminal investigations, and issued 311 University tickets. In addition, the department reports that it performed 2,990 building checks and made three arrests. to disciplinary action.
