Lions lose third player in past month
by Tony Viola
Collegian Staff Writer
The Behrend men's
basketball squad suffered
another major loss when star
senior center MoisC Pringle
decided to quit the team after
the Buffalo State game on
January 22.
Pringle said in an
interview this past Sunday
he quit playing so he could
get his academics
straightened out.
Also, since Behrend is
an NCAA Division 111
school and therefore is not
allowed to give athletic
scholarships, Pringle wasn't
getting any financial aid to
play basketball. This was
another factor in Pringle's
decision to quit the team.
Previously, the team had
also lost Junior guard Chris
Viscuso and Freshman guard
Omar Thrower. Viscuso was
dropped from the team
because of Behrend's
academic policies, while ,
Thrower quit the team
because of personal reasons.
The Lions now have 10
players on their roster.
Heading- into his last
semester, Pringle stated,
"It's time to look out for
Molsenow.”
Pringle thought about
quitting the team during the
'BB-89 season, so his
decision was -not air
overnight idea.
Pringle said the coaching
staff had nothing to do with
his decision about quitting.

When Pringle first came
to Behrend, he didn't try out
for the team until his
sophomore year so that he
could get a good start on his

dedication to academics
stems from the fact that he
wants to be the first person
from his family to graduate
from college. ,
Head Coach Doug
Zimmerman did riot know
how the loss of. Pringle
would, affect his team.

Loss of Pringle, poor shooting hampers young team
by Tony Viola
Collegian Staff Writer
Behiend's problems continued
last week with two road losses
and the quitting of star senior
center Moise Pringle.
Pringle said that he quit the
team to concentrate on his
academics. Pringle is the third
player to leave the team, for
various reasons, in the past
month. For more information,
please see related story on this
page.
Seventh year Head Coach
Doug Zimmerman commented on
the rest of his team's problems
Monday before practice.
"Other than wins and losses
right now, one problem is the
schedule", said the Lion's mentor.
"We only have nine home games
versus the twelve we had last
year. Second, we're not as deep
and we're not shooting the ball as
well. We're also much younger
this year compared to last."
Behrend's record away from
'The Pit' is a woeful 2-9, while
their overall record stands at a
disappointing 6-11. One bright

Bchiend's scoring average has
also fallen, down to 77.9 points

when the Lions averaged 87.7

Coach Zimmerman continued
by saying, "We're not getting as
much production off the bench.
We're getting a good effort from
the players, but our productivity
is off at times."
Another major problem for
Bchrend is that senior shooting
guard David Gurska is in a
terrible shooting slump. Gurska
has made only one field goal in
the past three contests. He also
hasn't been to the free throw line
in those three matches.
Forward Tim Mokma of the

Saturday night when they traveled
to Latrobe, Pa., to play St.
Vincent College. The Lions were
defeated for the fourth straight
time, by a score of 66-50.
Six foot-four sophomore
guard Jeff Cowan led Behrend
with 17 points. Out of the eight
field goals made by the Lions in
the first half, five were three
pointers made by Cowan, which
helped to keep Behrend close in
the first half. The score at the
end of the half was 30-27 in favor
of the Bearcats.
Behrend shot 33 percent from
the field while St. Vincent shot
40 percent.
Last Wednesday in Grove
City, the Wolverines controlled
the second half and went on to
beat Behrend, 61-49.
This was the first game played
by the Lions without the services
of Pringle.
