The Silicon Graphics workstations provide engineering, science and technology students with a chance to work with Computer Aided Design (C.A.D.). Provost eager for Behrend's future Lilley gives insight on upcoming campus projects by Daniele Sadres Collegian Staff Writer Dean and Provost John M. Lilley expressed great expectations for the future of Behrend College at a recent session of Coffee With the Provost Over twenty students attended the meeting on Wednesday, January 24 at 3:30 pm. Much of the group's discussion was focused on the many improvements scheduled to begin this summer. These include the construction of a $lO million library and three new residence halls. Also in the works are the million dollar revamping of Erie Hall this summer, repairs to Behrend's parking lots and the possible addition of three new lots. Dean Lilley seemed confident these projects constitute only the beginning of what will be an on going program to enrich the educational environment at Behrend. Lilley is looking toward future improvements in the quantity and quality of Behrend's faculty. Addressing an inquiry concerning the college's faculty student ratio, Lilley replied: "It's approximately 18:1. We're really forced to be pretty efficient." He stressed the importance of the quality of instructors. Behrend strongly encourages professors to have students write sobriety test and subsequently arrested for driving under the influence. The suspect was transported to Metro Health Center for a voluntary blood-alcohol- content analysis. DUI charges were withdrawn based on a low BAC reading of .056, and the student was cited for driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed. Damage to the vehicles was minor, and there were no injuries reported in the accident A false fire alarm forced the "Silicon Graphics are faster than anything they have at state college and they represent state of the art technology," boasts Paul Koch, assistant professor of Engineering. The C.A.D. equipment allows students to design projects in full-color, three-dimentional images and test engineering theories without building cosily mock-ups. "This gift rounds out what we feel is the most sophisticated computer engineering graphics lab in the tri-state region," said Dr. John M. Lilley, Provost and term papers and take written exams as opposed to multiple choice tests. Responding to the issue of undergraduate research funding, Lilley expressed his hope to expand funds for research programs in the future. The alarm system was reset, and students were allowed to return to the building within 20 minutes. Anyone with information in this case is asked to contact the Department of (continued on page 4) Dean.
