Snow Ball semiformal
dance highlights
Winterfest 1990

Student Programming
Council and the Student
Government Association will
sponsor Winterfest 1990 on the
weekend of February 2 - 3.
A variety of winter activities
have been planned. Some events
include human sled dog races,
tube races, snow soccer and
softball. Teams can register in
the Intramural Office, Reed
Student Union Building.
The final event of the fest will
be the Snow Ball semi-formal
dance. It takes place Saturday,
February 3, from 10 pm to 2 am
in the Winter Garden of the Reed
Building. Music will be provided
by a video disc jockey.
Tickets for the dance will go
on sale beginning January 24 and
will be sold through February 2.
Behrend ROTC impresses visiting Colonel
Program quality and numbers

Yesterday Behrend's ROTC
program was inspected by a high
ranking United States Army
officer.
Colonel Haspard R. Murphy,
commander of the Area 111 ROTC
Command, was briefed on the
status of Behrend's program and
cadets.
According to Murphy, the
program at Behrend is doing
really well in the quality and
number of students.
"Behrend is producing
outstanding leaders for the Army.
The program here is in good
shape. In fact, I don't come up
here as often as I visit other
universities because I don't have
to check up on the program," said
Murphy.
Murphy is responsible for all
of the high school and college
Behrend Drill Team
presents colors
The ROTC Drill Team did
double duty on Saturday, January
6th.
The team presented the
Nation's colors at the Fall
Commencement during the day
and at the basketball game later
that evening.
Along with basketball games
and Commencement, the ROTC
Drill Team may also be seen at
many local high school games
They can be purchased in the
Reed Building at a table in front
of the library and at the door the
night of the dance. The tickets
cost $5.00 for couples and $3.00
for singles.
In addition flowers can be
purchased at the same location.
Corsages will consist of red and
white carnations with silver
ribbon and boutonniere of white
carnations. Flowers can be picked
up in the Reed Union Building
on the day of the dance.
As part of the dance, a
Snowball Court has been
selected.

A career officer,'Murphy will
have spent 28 years in the Army
‘his September. Having come up
through the ROTC program
himself, he said there isn't much
difference between cadets of 20
years ago and today.
"Today's cadets have the same
mentality. Leadership, how to get
and parades presenting the colors.
Although the Drill Team is
operated through Behrend Army
ROTC, non-ROTC students
participate in the Drill Team.

Schack or James Barrett in the
ROTC office located in the lower
level of the Glennhill
Farmhouse.

He added today's students are a
lot smarter. "I think the desire to
learn is a lot keener. They want
to know why they're doing
something, not just do it,"
Murphy said

ROTC's future in light of an
ever-changing Eastern Europe,
Murphy replied the Army is in a
state of transition. He wasn't sure
of how many officer, reductions
there would be, but added there
"will still be a bright future for
students interested in the ROTC
program."

Cadet earns
commission
Behrend’s Army ROTC held a
Fall Commissioning Ceremony
in the Memorial Room of the
Glennhill Farmhouse on
Saturday, January 6.
Lori A. Beals was
commissioned to the rank of a
Second Lieutenant. She was also
graduated with Baccalaureate
degree in Communications.
Beals was a three year Army
scholarship recipient and will
serve in the Adjutant General
branch of the Army Reserve.
