Police Report: Police arrest four students for underage drinking over weekend Two other students get refered by Carol Mandera Collegian Staff Writer Campus police arrested four students for under-aged drinking on Sunday, January 21. Randy Hoffman, Manager of Police and Safety, reported the arrests were made after officers stopped the students' vehicle because of excessive, late-night, horn blowing. The department referred two male students to the Student Disciplinary Board for further action after officers caught the students trying to enter a Perry Hall window on Saturday, January 20. Officers determined that the students, both under 21, had been drinking. According to Hoffman, "Information available at the time led to the approved decision to refer rather than arrest." Campus police closed Glennhill Farmhuuse on Saturday, January 6, after ice fell Aum tfiv i uuf anil ruptured a natural gas line. Hoffman reported the accident happened shortly before midnight. His officers secured the building and ' reported the damage to National Fuel Gas Company. Gas company personnel shut WPSE appoints advisory board by Jennifer Flanagan Collegian Staff Writer Recently a community advisory board was appointed for Behrend's radio station, WPSE (AM 1450). Comprised of five prominent community leaders from the broadcasting and communications fields, the community advisory board was appointed by Provost and Dean John M. Lilley with recommendations from the station's policy board. The appointees are Robert Bach, sales manager of WJET FM; Edward P. Junker 111, chairman, president and CEO of Marine Bank; Christopher Zimmerman, president and Housing fair at UP University Park will hold Housing Fair '9O on January 26 and 27. Students can learn about the living environment on the campus and in the surrounding State College community from University Park and State College housing representatives, off-campus rental agencies, and other housing organizations. Hoffman indicated that no students were involved in the accident. Officers remained at the scene with the victims until Brookside and Pennsylvania State Police arrived. He said the calls arc not obscene and are probably originating from an off-campus location. A group of Mercyhurst students were ordered to leave Behrend Campus property on general manager of WQLN; Edward Wellejus, city editor of the Times Publishing Company; and Myron Jones, president and owner of JET Broadcasting Company. Ken Banting, WPSE's student station manager says the group assembled is a good one. "I'm really pleased with the people we have. They have years of broadcasting experience and are willing to give us a lot of valuable information. We're in a very good position." The advisory board's function is to provide community input and guidance to WPSE. The board's role is strictly advisory and has no control over any segment of the radio station, only Fair '9O include walking tours of University Park residence halls, bus tours of several local apartment complexes and Quick Tip sessions that give pointers on how to select on and off campus housing. Department records indicate that the three males and four females were discovered camping in the gorge area. Hoffman noted that alcohol did not appear to be a factor. Officers explained campus rules to the campers, before asking them to leave. Officers took possession of a knife found in the area. The department received reports of three cases of theft and one case of vandalism. The theft cases involve the theft of a portable stereo from a student's car parked in the apartment lot on January 21, the theft of a gold watch and a bracelet from a biology lab on January 18, and theft of a check from a resident student's mailbox in Reed on January 7. The vandalism report was filed on January 20 by a commuter student who stated that the tires on the right of her vehicle were slashed while the vehicle was parked in a commuter lot. Police are continuing to investigate the theft and vandalism cases, and Hoffman requests that anyone with information should contact the Department of Police and Safety at extension 6101. providing suggestions for improving WPSE programming and goals. "The advisory board does provide a vital link between the school and community," said Bunting, "besides offering feedback, the board voices community needs and offers guidance on programming and budget issues." WPSE was formed last spring as a result of a gift from Burbach Broadcasting Company. The station's administration and license is modeled after WPSU, University Park's station. It's primary functions are to offer educational opportunities for students and to serve the Erie Community.
