Page 8 Sports Lady Lions suffer 0-2 start at SUETY-Fredonia tournament The Lady Lions had trouble finding the basket in both their games at the SUNY-Fredonia tournament over the weekend, and as a result are off to an 0-2 start "We had• the shots, we just rushed them," said Women's Basketball Coach Jenepher Banker, as she tried to explain shooting problems of her young team. "We didn't take care of the ball." Banker was quick to point out that this is a young team that is still in the learning process. "We're still young. Eight of our 11 players are either freshmen or sophomores. As they get more experience and confidence, they'll get better." As for their shooting, Banker has a simple solution. "We have to get back to the basics. If we do that, I think we'll be fine." Behrend started off the tournament against nationally ranked Nazareth, a team that has Final Four potential. The Lady Lions shot 27 percent from the floor, while Nazareth made nearly half of their attempts. The Lady Lions trailed by 14 at the half and eventually lost, 79-44. Senior Michele Madison was Erie Panthers' winning streak reaches four games After winning only three of their first six games, the Erie Panthers have caught on fire and won their last four games. The latest East Coast Hockey League victory for the Panthers came on the road in Johnstown, as Erie defeated the Chief, 6-2. Rob McDougall lead Erie's attack with a hat trick. Netminder Craig Barnett anchored the defense, stopping 37 of 39 Chiefs shots. Panther's defenseman Steve Weinke and Dave Doucette opened the scoring, netting first period goals. At 6:47 of the second frame, R. In Saturday's consolation game, the Lady Lions faced the host team, SUNY-Fredonia. The shooting woes continued as Behrend tallied 28 percent from the field. The Lady Lions dug themselves a hole early as they hit only eight field goals in the first half, entering intermission trailing, 24-18. Despite decided advantages in shots (83-23 for the game) and in rebounds (51-46), the Lady Lions could not make up the deficit and lost by four, 60-56. Madison once again led the Lady Lions in scoring and rebounding, netting 16 points and nabbing 15 boards. Sophomore forward Melanie Dunn added 10 markers and grabbed eight rebounds. Madison was named to the All-tournament team, having a total of 32 points and 22 rebounds at the invitational. Lion's hoopsters split two games at Slippery Rock Tourney by Ken Kuria Collegian Staff Writer The Behrend men's basketball squad traveled to Slippery Rock, Pa., over the weekend for a tournament involving York College, Geneva College, and Slippery Rock University. The Lions outmatched York in their first game and won, 103- 63. The tables were turned in the final game, however, as the Slippery Rock Rockets, an NCAA Division II school, dominated the Lions, 103-71, in Saturday's championship game. In the preliminary game on Friday night, the Lions produced six double figure scorers against York. Senior guard Dave Gurska led the attack with 21 points, followed "by guards Randy Baughman (16), Jeff Cowan (14), and Chris Viscuso (10), and forwards Steve Cooper (13) and Moise Pringle (11). Head Coach Doug Zimmerman said the team did a little of everything well. The Lions played solid defense, • and shot and ran the ball effectively. Their press was working and they forced numerous turnovers. Behrend then faced Slippery Rock, who had beaten Geneva, 73-69, in their opening game. SRU's starters had a decided height advantage against the Lions. Zimmerman said that the Rockets will probably be the toughest opponent his team will face this year. He said, "They are as quick as we are, if not quicker." Behrend played sluggishly in the first half, but were only down eleven at intermission. The Lions came out shooting in the second half, converting their first ten shots. The score was tight until The Rock went on a run with about six minutes left. Presents Action vs. 49ers on AM-1450, Rick Demski led the Lions with 15 points, followed by Baughman (12), and Cooper (10). The Lions converted a dismal 28 percent of their shots in the championship game. The Rockets shot 58 percent from the field. Zimmerman said, "They (SRU) could have stood on their heads and the ball still would have gone in." Zimmerman thinks the team felt embarrassed by Slippery Rock's large margin of victory. "The feeling at practice (on Sunday) was that they didn't want that to happen again. These kids are going to work hard enough to make sure it doesn't? NOTES: Baughman was voted to the all tourney team.... Upcoming games for the Lions includes a home game on Nov. 30 against Oberlin and Dec. 2 against Thiel College.
