Ocampo Collegian Staff Writer The Education Abroad Program offered Behrend sophomore Alicia Gebhardt. the opportunity to discover the Spanish language and culture. Gebhardt was able to do this as a student of the "immersion" program at the Universidad Interamericana at San German, Puerto Rico during her sophomore semester, in the spring of 1989. Her experience abroad began when she arrived at the Universidad Interamericana in January of 1989. Alicia was one of 11 Penn State students who were studying at the Universidad. As a participant whose Political Science major focuses on Latin American Studies, Gebhardt found her course load to be an enriching experience. Previous classroom experience with Spanish 001 enabled Alicia to fulfill all 12 credits of intensive Spanish with Spanish 002, 003, and a cultural studies class, along with conversation. Police Report: fire alarm, phone calls, and thefts all investigated Investigations are continuing for three incidents involving the theft of campus property. A clock, valued at approximately $175, was stolen from the dining area outside the Wintergreen Cafe. The theft was reported by the Maintenance Department on November 14. The Computer Center reported the theft of a computer accessory kit valued at $4O. The exact date of the theft, which was reported on November 17, is unknown. Traffic signs were reported missing from the parking lot near the campus apartments on November 13. In what may be a related case, a yield sign and three no-parking signs were recovered from a wooded area near the apartments on the same date. Hoffman believes the signs are campus property but was not sure they were the same signs reported missing. Anyone with information pertaining to these cases is asked to contact the Department of Police and Safety at Extention #6lOl. As an update on the police crack-down on habitual parking violators, Hoffman reported that four students have had their parking privileges revoked for repeated violations. Nine additional students are on probationary status. Hoffman reported that his department follows standard university policy in suspending The Collegian Wednesday, November 22,1989 Since the students at the Universidad mainly spoke Spanish, Alicia found herself learning about Spanish heritage in as well as out of the classrooms. Adjustment to the daily routine and culture enabled Gebhardt to observe the differences between the two societies: "Since the students at the Universidad were similar to her American counterpart, any sort of culture shock was minor. Students of the Universidad know Americans and are friendly towards them." While students in Puerto Rico are more fashion conscious, couple-oriented, and go to more discos, they also travel to the malls of San Juan, eat American fast food, and go on beach outings. While studying abroad, Alicia was able to explore the cultural heritage and beauty of sites outside the Universidad Interamericana. She enjoyed visits to the rainforest, caves, indian reservations, the beaches of San Juan and Ponce, and the Bacardi Rum factory, and spent privileges after nine violations. He cautions students that the nine violations can be paid or unpaid. "As of nine violations," he said, "we suspend." Suspensions last for 15 semester-weeks; credit is not given for weeks during semester breaks; and fall semester suspensions will carry over to the spring semester. Since the Dominican Republic is a third-world country, Alicia was able to meet South Americans and Haitians. Gebhardt's trip to Puerto Rico began out of interest to relate her major in Latin American Studies to a broadening travel experience. As a sophomore, the Spanish immersion program was one of two Penn State language curricula available to her. The program at the Universidad Interamericana at San German, Puerto Rico, is one of the various programs available to students with limited foreign language background. Students can gain some knowledge of foreign language while taking classes towards most Behrend and University majors. Students interested in learning more about studying abroad may contact Mari Trenkle at 898-6150 for a listing of various curriculum available through the Education Abroad Programs. The enforcement of the suspension policy is one way the department addresses the parking problem at Behrend. "We either need more spaces or fewer cars," Hoffman said. "By suspending frequent violators and getting them off campus, we hope to make it easier for people who obey regulations to find easy and accessible parking." Editor.... James Martin
