Behrend seniors want on-campus ceremony Object to Warner commencement by Lea Gotch Collegian Staff Writer At least two Behrend seniors planning to graduate this spring aren't pleased that commencement ceremonies will be held off campus. As a result, they have started a petition to change those plans. The two seniors, Nan Quatchak and Randy Eadie, hope graduation ceremonies can be held on campus and not at Erie's downtown Warner Theater as is presently planned. In past years, ceremonies were held in front of the library on the grass. In case of rain, everything had to be moved in to Erie Hall. However, this year's senior class is too large to fit into Erie Hall, and therefore, if it rains, graduation would have to take place with half the senior class at a time. Quatchak feels that the petition will be of interest to anyone planning on graduating from Behrend in coming years because the change to Warner Theater will remain in effect until the new gymnasium is built. A date for the completion of the new gym is still indefinite. Quatchak and Eadie urge anyone that disagrees with the idea of holding graduation in Warner Theater, including faculty, staff, and students, to sign the petition. Student burns photos, triggers late night evacuation of Niagara by Card Mandera Collegian Staff Writer Niagara Hall residents were forced out of bed early Monday morning when a fire alarm caused the evacuation of the building. According to Randy Hoffman, Behrend's Manager of Police and Safety, the alarm sounded at 1:50 am. The building was evacuated and inspected. It was determined that a student had been burning photographs and that the-alarm- was triggered- by smoke from that fire. Students were permitted back into the building following the inspection. Mike Lesher, a resident of Niagara Hall, reported that students were outside in the cold, icy wind for about half an hour. "Most students had coats or jackets on," he said. "But....it was cold." - The department administered first aid to a student injured while playing basketball on November 16. The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 am, and the student reported to the Office of Police and Safety because the Men's compete in Slippery Rock Tourney - page 8 Health Center was closed. Records indicate that the student's wound, a one-inch laceration on his right eyelid, was checked, cleaned, and re-bandaged by department staff. The student was sent to the Health Center when it re-opened, and was transported from there to an outside facility for additional treatment. Students were permitted into the building following the inspection On November 15, a resident student reported receiving harassing phone calls from a known caller. According to Hoffman, the student had repeatedly asked the caller not to call. The caller was informed that campus police had been notified. The calls have stopped and the case is closed at this time. If future calls are received, the case will be re-opened and charges may result. B-ball
