Differences on the merits of implementing diversity in the curriculum exist. A diversity requirement course is one that focuses on certain groups such as blacks„ women, Hispanics, Jews, and gays. Robert Heinsohn, a faculty member of the College of Engineering at University Park, believes the university does not need a diversity requirement. "First of all, it is punitive. What to study is less important than the fact that students are compelled to take something called diversity. The requirement trivializes serious social is sues... The requirement is apt to become a perfunctory auditorium course." On the other hand, Mary Dupuis, director of Teacher Education in the goiek§ol - Education; - says' diireitity" is an inherent part of a college education. At Behrend there are currently black and women's. studies classes taught once a year. If the university approves some sort of diversity BDR (baccalaureate degree requirement), it will be implemented at all .of the commonwealth campuses. This could be as soon as next fall, according ,to Stanford, who notes the requirement will begin with the class of incoming freshmen. The Curricular Affairs Committee reports back to the Senate in January. A vote will then be taken in March. The resolution needs a two thirds majority in order to pass. Getting people interested in other cultures is a problem, according to Stanford. She explains not many people are willing to be exposed to other cultures and says many of the activities- - :pn. by organizations are only attended by the hosting groups.
