Behrend fraternities: Zeta Beta Tau could be joining the ranks of

SGA to vote on group's bid tonight

Last Wednesday Behrend's
Inter-Greek Council reconsidered
and approved the constitution
proposal by the Zeta Beta Tau
fraternity.
The new decision came after
the recommendations of Dave
Shields, Assistant Dean of
Student Services, and Dave
Johnson, president of IGC, for
the council to to sit down and
reevaluate the decision.
There were two issues IGC
had to look at: First, should ZBT
be a chapter, and second, do we
have too many chapters? Shields
and Johnson asked the council to
look at these issues separately,
instead of mixing the two as they
seemed to do the first time.
"We don't want to be elitist or
snobbish or close off groups, but
the greek system needs to build
internally," said Shields.
According to Shields, Behrend
seems to have caught charter

He would like to see two
years without any new groups
formed.
Shields said this means
developing the greek system we
already have to make room for
new chapters.
Student Government, whose
last vote on ZBT ended in a tie,
will vote again on the issue
tonight. With IGC's new decision
to approve the fraternity, there is
a greater chance of a go-ahead
vote for ZBT.
However, SGA President Stan
Washington said "It's still up in

Questions about the role
of campus radio station
(continued fnom,iotige one)
that the community might be
interested in," he said. -
Bunting raised the issue of
the radio station's broadcasting
freedom during a recent Coffee
With The Provost, held October
11.
About 25 people were in
attendance at the monthly
forum, including Dean and
Provost John Lilley as well as
Dean of Student Services Chris
Reber.
WPSE has made no plans to
air stories on Alcohol
Awareness Week, which runs
October 16-20.
Reber explained the
administration was not opposed
to such programming, so_ long
as it was presented accurately
and fairly.
"I think the larger question is
one of a PR (public relations)
versus a news function," Lilley
said of the radio station.
"We can talk about any
subject and I think we should, "
he continued. "One of the major
purposes of the university is
that of education. On the other
hand, I would be very sorry if
someone purposely made
Behrend look bad."
Lilley explained it wasn't his
habit, however, to censor the
campus media.
Both Reber and Lilley
explained the radio station
encounters the additional
constraint of meeting FCC
guidelines.
In general terms, Lilley said
he is pleased with the radio
station, especially giiren what
he termed its "shoestring
budget."
"I'm very proud of hoW it's
going so far and am absolutely
delighted when people tell me
they listen to it."
In other discussion at the_
meeting, Lilley was questioned
by Student Programming
Council President Brent Vernon
about his views on providing
campus police officers with
firearms.
I get the feeling they
(the administration)
are steering us away
from controversial
issues.
--Ken Bunting
VVPSF, Station Manager
"I don't know if we need it, I
don't know if we want it. I just
don't know the issues," Lilley
said.
"We have taken precautions
to make this a safer campus,"
Lilley added.
Lilley was also questioned
about a recent incident
involving a campus police
officer who brought a dog to a
dance sponsored by the
Association of Black
Collegians. •
"I think bringing a dog on
campus was a mistake and
misunderstood," Lilley said.
"The dog was a terrible symbol
and was a mistake. I regret it
happened."
