The Collegian Wednesday, October 11, 1989 Liberal and conservative ideals clash in a debate held during Parents weekend (continued froth page 1) In the area of domestic policy, Rusher said Bush promised no new taxes during his campaign and has stuck to the promise. On the subject of foreign policy, Rusher cast a shadow on the changes in the Soviet Union. "Perestrioka in itself can not work and that means that Mr. Gorbachev is going to fail," Rusher said. Their introductions were followed by three five-minute rebuttals. During his rebuttal, Rusher >aid the Democrats are ready to blame Bush for anything. In response to Kondracke's comment about the much publicized HUD scandal, Rusher said, "HUD and the whole idea is essentially a liberal idea." Kondracke responded by noting "Government help (for the poor) means that some Republican conservative is going to get fat." He continued to say that waste, fraud, and abuse have not been stopped by Bush and FREE HELP IRS The Collegian Advice Column by Dr. Louanne Barton, Psychologist My roommate is planning a party. A lot of our friends are underage. I'm against the idea ever since the "big bust" in Perry. I'm not going to tell him what to do, but how do I keep from being liable? I could go visit a friend or go home for the weekend. What would you suggest? Dear S. Annonymous, I can sure understand why you want to remain annonymous. As I am sure you already know, you , stand to lose big bucks if you're judged responsible for making alcohol available to underage drinkers (minimum of $l,OOO for the first person and $2,500 for each additional person). You are smart in trying -to disengage yourself from the party, but legally you are still responsible if you know about the party even if you're not there. You are considered an accessory to the crime because you didn't take steps to stop it. It is my understanding that the courts will take into consideration the fact that you did not participate. So if you can't talk your roommate out of the party you'd better blow town till things cool down. Reagan. In response to a Kondracke remark about the deterioration of nuclear plants during the past Republican administrations, Rusher said it is the fault of CongresS because they haven't allocated the money needed to maintain nuclear plants. The budget deficit is too big to be taken care off by anybody; it is going down only if you cheat by using the surplus in Social Security, Kondracke said. "In terms of the economy, the debt was larger under Ford than under Reagan," said Rusher Kondracke concluded by saying it will cost tax money in order to get the American education system up to world standards. During a question and answer period following the debate, Kondracke suggested Senator Bill Bradley might be a presidential candidate in 1992. Asked why defense spending shouldn't be cut, Rusher said cuts have been made, but that conservatives believe in defense.
