Adult Children of Alcoholics helps students

The 'ability to overcome a
struggle for intimacy and develop
a strong, nurturing relationship is
the aim of ACOA, Adult
Children of Alcoholics.
Psychologist Dr. Louanne
Barton, organized ACOA in
response to students who come
from dysfunctional homes such
as those that have members who
are addicts or abusive. This
service is now available for those
who would like to continue
participation in such a support
group separate from Alcoholics
Anonymous.

Imagine 51,670 pennies lined
up end to end. That's how many
pennies Omicron Delta Kappa"'
rolled at the end of their Mile of
Pennies drive for Diehl
Elementary School.
The national honor society
raised $516.70, which will go
towards the puichase of a
computer for the spec ial
education . department at DiehL
The group's goal was $B5O, or
85,000 pennies. Even though
ODK didn't reach their target,
Eric Rozell, president of ODK,
said that the drive was definitely
successful and was very happy
with the response they received.
David Stuntz, ODK's advisor,
said the idea came from a similar
event he saw while in college.
"The group collected over five
miles of pennies in one day. The
town closed main street for .the
event and banks stayed open late
to change donations into
pennies." Stuntz said he could see
that type of reaction happening
here in a few years.
He added that the Mile of
Pennies fundraiser was held
during Parents Weekend to
"communicate to parents that part
of the college experience includes
service to the community, giving
back a little of what we take."

all student government senators,
all club, organization, and, SGA
officers, all resident assistants, all
which enabled them to survive
childhood, are tow constricting
them from developing a "healthy,
normal relationship." These
people are referred to as co
dependents because they have not
come closer to developing their
own identities. They lack self
love and positive self-esteem.
Statistics illustrate that the
numbers of Adult Children of
Alcoholics are widespread: One in
four kids in school come from a
home with a drinking problem.
ACOA's are three to four times
more likely to become alcoholics
themselves. These individuals
have a 50% greater chance of
becoming involved with an
alcoholic or addictive personality.
The ACOA group at Behrend
makes all incoming members
welcome to come listen as well
as talk about their problems. As
with any group of this nature, all
issues are to be kept confidential
within the organization.
The organization welcomes
any student who feels he or she
is undergoing similar patterns in
another type of dysfunctional
family.
Students who are undergoing
difficulties such as relationship
separation, loneliness, stress, etc.
